The loss of Nick Adenhart was a blow to every to every piece of the Angels organization. Adenhart signed with the Angels at the age of 18 and played in the Angels Organization at every level. The Bees postponed their season opener, which was to be played on Thursday, as a tribute to the late Nick Adenhart.

The Angels Class A Affiliate, the Cedar Rapid Kernels kicked off their season sweeping the Beloit Snappers, and starting the season 3-0. Hector Estrella kicked off the season on Thurday by going 2-6 and driving in 3 RBIs. Michael Davitt started the season by going 5.2 innings, allowing 6 hits and 2 ER, while fanning 10 Beloit batters, and earned a no-decision. The Kernels recorded 16 of 27 outs by way of strikeout. Alex Auer has hit the only HR for the Kernels this season. Jeremy Thorne has the only save for the Kernels. Hector Estrella leads the team with 4 RBIs.

In Advanced-A, the Rancho Cucamongo Quakes started out their season with a series against the Inland Empire 66ers and started the season with a record of 2-1. On Thursday with Kelvim Escobar getting scratched due to a set back in rehab, Trevor Reckling, the 19 year old southpaw got the nod as the opening day starter. Boy, he didn’t disappoint. Reckling went 6 innings, giving up no runs, only allowing 2 hits, and strking out 7, giving him and the Quakes their 1st win of the season. 22 year old Julio Perez is showed his power, by stroking 2 HRs in 12 at bats and a .917 slugging percentage. On Friday, 21 year Alexander Torres took the mound giving up 2 ER in 5 innings, but struck out 10 batters and was able to record his first win of the season. Matthew Sweeney drove in 3 RBIs as the Quakes won 9-2. On Saturday, Tim Kielty started the season shaky giving up 7 hits and 3 ER in his 1st start of the year. The Quakes lost for the 1st time this season 4-3, and were only able to record 5 hits off of Inland Empire.

Peter Bourjos has been putting on a show with the Arkansas Travelers ,who are starting the season 1-2. He’s leading team in Hits, RBIs, SLG%, and OBP. He has already hit 2 triples in three games. The Travelers power hitting duo, Mark Trumbo and Hank Congers, have started slow, going a combined 2-18 with 6 strikeouts. Sean O’Sullivan took the mound for the Travelers on Opening Day, going 6 strong innings and only allowing 1 run, to defeat the Midland Rockhounds. After a strong Spring, Jordan Walden took the mound for the first time on Friday giving up 2 runs in 5 innings of work, he received the loss. Amalio Diaz went 6 innings on Saturday, while giving up 2 runs and fanning 7 batters, but still received the loss.

After postponing their season opener, the Salt Lake Bees started their season 1-1. Highly touted Brandon Wood has a home run and 2 RBIs, going 2-8 in the opening series. Anthony Ortega, who is expected to get the call next week for the fifth spot in the Angels rotation, started the year going 5 innings, surrendering 1 run, to get the first win of the season. Matt Palmer started on Saturday and was hammered, giving up 6 earned runs in 1.2 innings. Reggie Willits was recalled by the Angels to take the roster spot left by the loss of Nick Adenhart. Reggie Wilits response to the call-up “I don’t feel like I’m replacing Nick — I don’t think anyone is going to replace him,” Willits said. “But I remember telling my wife, I really hope it’s not me, because of how hard this is.I know the organization has to move on, but it’s only been a couple of days. We not only lost a teammate, we lost a friend, and the world lost a pretty good guy with a bright future ahead of him.”
