Jay Cutler should have put up big numbers against the Bills defense, but he didn’t do that. Cutler only completed 17 0f 30 passes for 188 yards and two touchdowns, but he made some big plays on his own.

Cutler is known as one of the better quarterbacks out of the pocket, but the offensive line hasn’t let him get out of the pocket very much this season. Against the Bills he was pressured 15 times, he turned nine of those plays into 121 yards of offense.

Seeing him scramble and make throws on the run or run on his own was refreshing for any Bears fan. Cutler completed two huge passes to Earl Bennett and Greg Olsen, both coming on third-and-10. On five scramble attempts by Cutler, he ran for 39 yards.

Expect Cutler to get out of the pocket more if the offensive line allows him to. He will be pressured by a very good Vikings defense come Sunday. The offensive line seemed much improved with RG Roberto Garza back in the lineup.

Cutler will be called upon to make more plays like he did against the Bills on Sunday. The more scrambles out of the pocket by Cutler the more big plays he will likely make. The passing game is improving just as well as the running game, but if Jay Cutler can improve his game the offense as a whole will start to excel.

Cutler will have big test against the Vikings on Sunday.
