2010 Conference Championship Analysis:

For the second-straight year, I will be publishing weekly November columns analyzing the conference championship races.  Bold teams have already clinched their division.  Italicized divisions are my predicted champions at this point in time.

ACC Atlantic- Florida State (And that’s why you stick with your division title pick, despite everyone telling you to change it.)

ACC Coastal- Virginia Tech (This team could be sitting on the verge of a national championship berth if not for a controversial reversal of block in the back penalty in their opener versus Boise.)

Big 12 North- Nebraska (Well the refs try to screw Bo Pelini out of the Big 12 Title next Saturday?)

Big 12 South- Oklahoma (We’ve got the renewal of a classic old-school rivalry next weekend in the Big 12 title game.  The winner gets the ultimate prize of playing the Big East champ in their bowl game.  Yeah, maybe the stakes aren’t that big after all…)

SEC East- South Carolina (Go Gamecocks! The Chicken Curse is over!)

SEC West- Auburn* (There is an asterisk by Auburn’s SEC West title because it may be vacated within the next couple of weeks depending on the Cam Newton fallout.)

Big East- West Virginia (The Wannstache choked away another conference title with Pitt’s home loss to West Virginia.  How can anyone squander that much talent every year?  At any rate, I now think the Mountaineers take the Big East title next Saturday, as they beat a downtrodden Rutgers squad and UConn loses to a resurgent USF team.  I wish I would have just stuck with with my preseason pick (WVU) like I did in the ACC Atlantic.

Big Ten- Wisconsin (The Badgers are on their way to Pasadena.)

Pac-10- Oregon (The Ducks have clinched the conference crown but they better be careful in their final two games.)

Mountain West- TCU (The Frogs are hoping for another mayhem final weekend of the season like we saw in 1998 and 2007.)

WAC- Three-way tie (Poor Kyle Brotzman.  I really feel sorry for the guy.  At any rate, I haven’t found any kind of tiebreaker for this conference, so I’m pretty sure an outright champ won’t be crowned and instead Hawaii, Boise, and Nevada will all share the title.)

C-USA East- UCF (What a nice job George O’Leary has done with this program.)

C-USA West- SMU (What a job June Jones has done.  How he has not gotten snagged by a big program yet?)

MAC East- Miami-OH (Turnaround story of the year!)

MAC West- Northern Illinois (It’s a shame the Huskies still aren’t in the top 25.)

Sun Belt- FIU (Unless Miami wins the MAC, then the Golden Panthers take the crown as the surprise conference winner of the season.)
