Check out this scouting report on Tim Thomas by Philly.com . I tell you one thing that the Boston Bruins have a huge edge on the Flyers in net, it’s not even close. The Flyers have a stable of horrid goalies, the Boston Bruins have a Vezina Trophy winner in Tim Thomas and an awesome back up in Tuukka Rask as well.

Hockey if a physical game and injuries will happen on the ice in the NHL, or any hockey league that has contact, sometimes injuries just happen. Let’s hope that Simon Gagne is going to be OK and he doesn’t have another concussion.

H/T to ExileOnDaytonStreet for posting a link to this article on his blog.

NAPLES — While most of the convention attendees agreed that the popularity of the sport is on the upswing, some said one of the best ways to maintain the momentum is to keep the players healthy. Just like their professional counterparts, college hockey officials are trying to reduce the number of concussions and other serious injuries through rule changes and stiffer penalties for multiple offenders.

ECAC Director of Officials and former NHL player and referee Paul Stewart said the topic of hits to the head has been at the forefront of the convention.

“It’s the No. 1 topic for everyone at all levels of hockey,” Stewart said. “Player safety is a very important part of the game and through rules, coaching and punishment I think it’s something that can be improved.”

Shaun Marcum gave up a leadoff walk to Michael Bourn. Who steals second. And is stranded by Pence and Clank.

And after that, Marcum REALLY shut it down – except for Brett Wallace, of course, who singled up the middle, reached on catcher interference and hit a long single offn the scoreboard. He was the ONLY hitter who saw the ball – or at least could hit what he saw. Marcum threw some kind of cutter and curve after lethal curve after lethal curve and couldn’t nobody hit it. Or lay off it. Well, Bourn did beat out an infield grounder, but speed kills.

Marcum threw 7 innings of 3 hit 2 walk shutout ball. He was pulled after 95 pitches and if the Astros were hoping to FINALLY be able to get to that bullpen, well, no cigar.

The Bears traded up to get a big defensive tackle that will help plug some holes on defense. Stephen Paea from Oregon State is considered the seventh best defensive tackle and the Bears traded their No. 62nd and No. 127th picks with the Redskins to get him.

So, you know the Bears wanted to get Paea, who broke an NFL Combine record by doing 49 bench press reps at 225 lbs. Paea is a 6’1″ DT who weighs about 303 lbs. Paea will mix in well with Henry Melton, Matt Toeaina and Anthony Adams. The Bears have gone by need with their first two picks, OT and DT.

I like these two picks. Gabe Carimi has endless potential and Paea has a endless motor. Analysts say he would be best as a three-technique lineman and that was what the Bears were looking for. Rumor has it the Bears considered taking Paea at No. 29 last night if Gabe Carimi wasn’t available.
