Bears offensive coordinator Mike Martz is excited for the season to starts just like the rest of us. He has been awfully impressed by Jay Cutler’s improvement from last year just over these few days of training camp.
Here’s what Martz had to say about what he saw in Cutler and much more about this off-season:
“Technically, his footwork and his drops, I was kind of stunned,” Martz said Tuesday. “He’s done an awful lot of work on his own in the offseason. I was kind of giddy, to be honest with you, because watching him drop back right now is textbook. I didn’t know how we were going to get him there, but he got there by himself before he came to camp and I couldn’t be more happy with that.”
“Coaches feel like if they’re not there that these guys aren’t going to train right and practice right and do all those things,” Martz said. “But you know in today’s age with all the video equipment and the game tapes and they’re heard this enough where they go back and analyze themselves. However he did it, I don’t know how he did it, but I’m amazed at the progress that he made while he was away from us.”
“Leadership is kind of a funny thing,” Martz said. “Everybody has different versions of what it is, but I think confidence and how you approach your craft says everything about it—and your ability to exude that in the huddle and how you play. And that’s where he is right now, he has such a great grasp of where we are offensively and what we’re trying to accomplish from last year.”
