Anderson 5, Royals 3
Everyone was waiting for a game like this, but no one more than Garret Anderson. The oft-injured slugger has seen those injuries decrease his production over the past few years, even though he still brings production to the lineup.
Fans, undoubtedly, were wondering just when Anderson would turn his season around and start to produce, even at his current levels. So, his 3-for-5 performance in Tuesday night's game was a welcome sight.
His three-run home run in the fourth inning started the Halo scoring, helping a once-again shaky Nick Adenhart (who, despite allowing three runs in 4.1 innings, lowered his ERA to 11.37). Anderson drove in all five of the Angels runs, giving the win to Darren Oliver (2-1). Francisco Rodriguez nailed down his league-leading 14th save.
The Angels are second in the league in hitting, and it is despite lackluster production from Anderson (.237), Vladimir Guerrero (.264) and Gary Matthews, Jr. (.221). Where they are getting surprise offense is from Erick Aybar (.310) and Mike Napoli (seven home runs). This just leads me to believe that when Anderson and Guerrero snap out of whatever funk they are in, this offense will be a great deal better.
In fact, Vlad's two hits (a double and a triple) were to the opposite field, leading one to hope that this is a sign that he is keeping his front shoulder in and lessening his often cartwheeling swing.
With the win, the team's 21, the Angels are tied with Boston for the best record in the American League, and third best in all of Major League Baseball.
Plus, who would have thought that most of this would be due to Ervin Santana and Joe Saunders? Combined, their 12 wins are nearly 60 percent of the team's wins. What will happen when John Lackey returns? It will be like a free-agent signing -- and shore up the disasterous fifth starter spot being held on to now by Adenhart.
Taking a series from Kansas City is not exactly earth-shattering, but with the surprising success Oakland has shown thus far, any series is a good one.
