Pacquiao Vs. De La Hoya? Don’t Laugh, It Could Be A Reality
ESPN’s Dan Rafael is reporting that there are very serious talks between Top Rank and Golden Boy Promotions to stage a mega fight between pound-for-pound and WBC lightweight champ Manny Pacquiao to face superstar Oscar De La Hoya. The fight would take place on December 6th at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas and be fought at the welterweight limit of 147 pounds. The fight would be De La Hoya’s last before retirement.
I admit that at first I scoffed at the notion of Pacquiao, a fighter who started his career at flyweight, taking on a a fighter who once challenged Bernard Hopkins for the middleweight championship od the world. But the more I think about it, and the fact that Pacquiao looked so damn good as a lightweight, the more I feel that the fight would be justified. After all unlike the mega-money “fight” pitting De La Hoya against Floyd Mayweather Jr., this fight is sure to display some legitimate action.
But there are questions to be asked. Can De La Hoya boil himself down to 147 pounds? The last time the Golden Boy fought at such weight was against Arturo Gatti back in 2001. As for Pacquiao, how will he perform at the highest weight of his career? Will his speed and power travel north with him? Can he take a punch from a naturally bigger man? Truthfully it is these very questions that make the fight one the public would love to see. And don’t get me started on the money that will line the pockets of the invested parties. While it may not trump the previously mentioned Mayweather bout in terms of financial success (Mayweather’s a-hole persona helped bump up the buy rate) it would be wildly popular and may bring some positive attention to the sport.
I think I’m sold on it. While I would prefer to see De La Hoya fight the winner of the Cotto-Margarito bout and Pacquiao tackle some of the top 135 pound fighters I will not poo-poo a fight between the two.

I think this is good for boxing. It will generate the necessary boost to its sagging popularity because of lackluster and below par performance of some boxers who are considered at the top of boxing world. Manny could provide the fans with the entertainment and imagination which no boxer in the world today including Mayweather can. This is also some kind of a record in the books maybe for the Guinness. Oscar has also some kind of motivation here. One, this fight will get so much interest that even the non boxing fans will try to witness this and surely the business wise it will be a hit. Two, he will surely not give Manny the distinction of beating him in his farewell fight so this will be a real fireworks not a circus many thinks.
So I say let the “Fight of the Century Begins”

This will be an unbelievably exciting fight. It has Greek mythology or even biblical undertones i.e, David vs. Goliath. I am a die hard fan of Pacquiao, but fighting De la Hoya is in my feeling kind a too much for a much smaller fighter like Manny. If I were Bob Arum I should go for Valero and do it in Venezuela to gain more popularity, and perhaps more money. After Valero, the ideal fighter would be Joan Guzman, then Juan
Manuel Marquez and lastly Hatton which should be held in England.

I’m a PacFan or what others say a PacNut … i’m thinking what many would say this is a great mismatch in terms of height and weight, and this stuff is usually for fantasy or movies only - like pitting Ali against Tyson in a computer simulation or the more recently fight against Rocky Balboa and the character of Tarver … on those computer simulations and movies, people are left wondering if who will be the real winner if the two fighters actually fight in the ring.

The Golden Boy vs. The Pacman will be an electrifying fight. I believe this is good for boxing and to all boxing fans. The Pacman Manny could give the boxing fans with the entertainment and thrill which I think no boxer in the world today even the “lousy” Mayweather can. There is nothing to loose for both fighters. A catch weight at 145lbs is what I think to be the fairest weight for both fighters since ODLH is at 154 while MP is at 135 at present. If this mega fight comes to reality, the Philippines will declare a special holiday!

In my own opinion even if I am a Filipino the fight might ended up to Oscar De La Hoya. Yes! Oscar is a little bet slow but we knew that age might not affect the performance of ODLH. Pacman’s scheduled fight:
1. De la Hoya - could beat up this oldie
2. Jones Jr. - definitely washed up so could be beaten.
3. Holyfield - weight could be problem but definitely possible.
4. Hatton - most probable exciting fight.

Other than “The Mexicutioner versus Mexican Savior”, this will be a very entertaining and a very exciting fight. This fight will give PPV subscriber their hard-earned money’s worth because both fighters love to head on collision. It will be a much much better brawl than Pacquiao-Barrera 1.
It will be a fair fight because they will meet in the middle[(135+160)/2=147.5#] between their convenient fighting weight.
This fight will be like Roy Jones versus Ruiz(physical, talent and speed wise.)
Pacman will KO Golden Boy because Oscar simply can not keep-up with the speed and power of the Pacman. Weight reduction and age is the main factor. Ask the boxing genius Michael Marley.

Reading the news makes me think tht I am dreaming right now.I am so excited that I almost forgot the continous rising price of petroleum products,the corruption,unemployment rate and Floyd Mayweather is a disappointment. Just look at the last fight of oscar against forbes, he was too slow and cant not even knockdown steve, if forbes has power like manny, oscar was already down by the eight round. This fight must HAPPEN. It’s good for the protagonists {pacman and oscar}, it’s good for the fans, and most especially its great for boxing in general. This is what boxing needs… a boxing match with epic proportions. There’s a lot of good stories you can tag for this fight. Here are some:

This match is a WIN-WIN situation for both oscar and manny. if oscar wins, he could be the saving grace of mexico who’s legends have been victims of the pacman. if oscar loses, he has nothing to be ashamed of because he’ll lose against the P4P king and a proven fighter who raises the level of his game when pressed against the odds {pacman will most likely be the underdog coming into this match}
In the case of the pacman, if he loses it will be against the great oscar delahoya-6division world champ. Theres no reason to be ashamed also. I’m a fan of ODLH since he was not a champ yet. I watched his every fight. I probably became a well grown boxing fans because of him. I watched every fight of Pacman too. I’m a witnessed of how well he’s become an all around boxer. I’m fan of both fighters. It would be great if I could watch them fight toe to toe. This is a dream come true for me and all boxing fans all over the world. Please I beg, let ODLH and Pacman fight a dream come true.

You will never enjoy the fight because here’s the plan of Manny and Oscar….Comes fight night, first round, he will throw some speedy punches, and when he will be slightly beaten by Oscar, act like being KO’d then Freddie steps in waving or throwing the white towel. This is a silly fight, it’s becoming clear that promoters are trying to take the quick buck rather than gradually rebuild the sport to the masses. The incessant PPVs of only decent fights, and recently, the exploitation of names providing lousy matches, with no long-term consideration.
It boggles my mind that anyone would want to see this. Pacquaio has yet to beat Juan Manuel Marquez as a featherweight, why on earth should he jump another 12lbs to fight a faded Oscar? I can’t blame the fighters for wanting the biggest purse - after all, they are PROFESSIONALS without a pension plan - but the fans need to stop buying into this, as do the networks. People don’t seem to realize just how small Pac is compared to DLH, he’s not Superman! David Diaz was a paper champion - he was given the bogus belt after Casamayor was stripped, to promote the Morales fight - and a limited, slow, journeyman fighter who won through incredible courage and correct timing, ala Arturo Gatti. The Diaz-Pac fight proved little.
Pac needs to beat JMM, then consider legitimate opposition like Campbell/Guzman winner or Diaz/Katsidis winner. A Hatton fight is legitimate but less pleasing. A DLH bout is dreadful. If this does happen, people will be shocked at how small and weak Manny is in comparison, DLH will knock him out in the mid rounds.
The bettor in me wants to see this happen and the public consider it an even fight, so I can bet on DLH and take your money. Hell it beats having my JM Marquez bets robbed for a 3rd time.

One more thing: When people talked of Floyd-Pac, it was scoffed at as a mismatch, Floyd avoiding stiffer competition to pad his resume over a smaller, less skilled opponent. Which is true.
So why is a much bigger DLH getting a free pass?
The winner of Cotto/Margarito is P4P#1, and I think Floyd could beat other one convincingly. Pavlik/Calzaghe are (likely) meeting for #2. Pacquaio needs a legitimate win against a legitimate opponent, that means Guzman, J. Diaz (the good diaz), or JM Marquez before he gets higher.

I’ve been watching ODLH’s fights being the greatest of the greats while watching Pacman’s fights as he was just starting to travel to his greatness, and now I can’t even imagine that this dream fight had come to talks already and a possibility. This is definitely a mismatch, but intriguing nonetheless. Oscar has nothing to gain other than a quick $50 mil payday. Pacman has nothing to lose. If he wins he goes down as an all-time great. If he loses, at least he gets credit for taking on the Golden Boy and probably pockets $30 mil in the process. Oscar is most likely waiting to see if Cotto wins this weekend, for that is a more natural opponent for him. He’s an undefeated Puerto Rican in his prime, and it would definitely make a statement if Oscar fought competitively with him. But if Cotto loses, the fight with Margarito would be harder to sell and he might take on Pacman. Manny should fight Hatton first instead of jumping the gun. Oscar will still be around next year despite his retirement threats. Even Brett Favre has more retirement credibility. Here’s how it’ll go down:
Cotto will beat Margarito and face DLH in December.
Pacman will pressure either Hatton or Joan Guzman to take him on in November. Next year he’ll cement his legacy as the greatest pure boxer of all time. Even better than Hearns or Ali. Doesn’t seem so far-fetched anymore does it Mr. Starks??

Its a david vs goliath fight. im a filipino but i do believe that dela hoya is the huge favorite but you cannot discount an upset from paquioa. Dela hoya cannot take for granted this man who is seeking history.
