The NBA's power distribution and the Pareto Principle
I was looking at my NBA depth rankings, and I noticed something interesting. The NBA's distribution of starting unit/ bench unit power seems to follow the 80/20 rule.
Its very interesting, and I noticed the same phenomenon when I used to do my Point Value over Average Power Rankings (I stopped because it was way too time consuming... but I am planning to update at the All-Star break).
The NBA has 30 teams. 8 of them always seem to stand out above the rest. Take a look again at my depth rankings. Of the 30 NBA teams, only 8, or 20%, receive positive point production per minute from both their starting units and their bench. Thus I think you can call these eight teams a sort of "NBA Elite" for the moment (though you would get a strong argument from New Orleans, Dallas, and Houston... each of whom receive strong play from their starting units but weak play from their bench units):
1. Cleveland Cavaliers
2. Los Angeles Lakers
3. Boston Celtics
4. Portland Trailblazers
5. Denver Nuggets
6. Atlanta Hawks
7. Utah Jazz
8. San Antonio Spurs
( and, a team who should be in this group and will likely displace one of these teams once their bench goes from +0.0 up to positive production):
9. Orlando Magic
