Game Stats Box Score: Bucks 81 v. Chicago 83

Tough Loss

Without Michael Redd, the Bucks are basically a professional version of Dick Bennett's Wisconsin Badgers... except with less passing.  Therefore, just like Bennett's Badgers, I'm afraid no lead prior to the two minute mark of the fourth quarter will ever be safe.  Below I have a link to tonight's Game Stats Box Score, along with a few comments on the game and the state of the Bucks.

Moute's second horrible road game
...
If you look at the box score, the party most responsible for tonight's loss was Luc Moute.  He was abysmal.  More than that, he was destroyed by Luol Deng, who had a monster game (22.0 WS points in 42 minutes) and appears to be back to his old self.  Moute needs to step up.  My preseason predictions assumed his rookie season wasn't a fluke.  It probably wasn't, but I'm getting worried.
...
Two Creators
...
According to NBA.com's transcript, only two Bucks made unassisted field goals: Bogut and Jennings (not counting Warrick's putback in the first quarter).  And if you read my last post, most of the Bucks attempts at "self-creation" went clank.  They have to pass the ball to get any offense.  They just have no other choice.  Which leads to the next dilemma...
...
No Point Guard
...
Since Jennings is the only one who can get his own shot, he's had to basically abandon the role of point guard.  He's really playing shooting guard now.   In the last two games Jennings has had 7 assists on 38 field goal attempts, for an Assist/FGA percentage of 18.4%.  The average NBA PG has an Ass/FGA % of 52.8%.  The average NBA SG has an Ass/FGA % of 24.4%.  So, you see, if the Bucks rely on Jennings as a scorer, they have no playmakers on the floor.  Ridnour's got a high Ass/FGA, but only because he rarely shoots.  And he hasn't been much of a playmaker when he's been on the floor.  I don't know how to solve that problem.  I just hope it doesn't stunt Jennings growth as a point guard.
...
Manhandled on the boards
...
Andrew Bogut had his best game of the season so far, but most of the other frontliners were really pushed around on the defensive boards.  Hakim Warrick continues to be substandard in that area.  He's a good offensive rebounder, but he's doing a poor job of protecting the defensive glass.  His defensive rebounding % tonight was around 14%, which is good for a small forward, but below average for a power forward.   Moute grabbed one rebound in 27 minutes.  As I said, he was awful.   Bell and Delfino were good, but it's really not their job to have to do a lot of the defensive rebounding.  We need more out of  the 4.
...
Free Throws, Turnovers, and Rebounds
...
Remember I wrote after the Detroit game that the Bucks wouldn't lose if they could win these 3 areas?  Well, they lost 2 of the 3 in Chicago.  The free throw disparity was a whopping 31 attempts for the Bulls, 10 for the Bucks.  The Bucks have no one who can get to the line, or rather, no one who looks to get to the line.  The breakdowns are nauseating.  The Bucks 10 free throws came on 71 two point shots (14.0%), which is way below NBA average (39.0%).  Meanwhile the Bulls 31 free throws came on only 63 Bulls two point shots (52.3%), way above NBA average.  That's a lethal combination: passive on offense, hackmasters on defense.  The net result is the Bulls outscored the Bucks at the line by 15 points in a game that was decided by 2 points.  Free throws are going to be an ongoing concern again this season, obviously.  On the other fronts, the Bucks won the turnover battle, 18 to 11, but lost the battle of the boards, 53 to 44.
...
Projected Bucks record:  Now don't freak out about this, because the Bucks have played two road games to only one home game, but the Bucks projected record took a huge hit tonight.  After 3 games it now stands at 25.6-56.4.   After tonight's action, the Bucks adjusted defensive numbers are just above average, while their adjusted offensive numbers have fallen through the floor (-11.13).  Again, no cause for concern yet, but...

Jennings basically has to take over the scoring duties now that Redd is out, hopefully he can still manage to dish the ball vs the T’Wolves. I think he’ll still be a true point even with the scoring duties.

there’s a lot of good that we can take from this game, but the end shows there’s still a long way to go. namely, that the opposition forming a damn conga line to the free throw line will, more often than not, kill ya.

Why do the Conga Lines happen? Its not like the Bucks are purposely fouling. I tried to watch closely last night to get some answers and I think its partially because the opposition is not afraid of getting their shot blocked in the lane so they attack the basket with reckless abandon and force a call. I don’t know though.
