2010: Don't Forget the Celtics

Could we soon see Joe Johnson playing in Green? - Eric Kilby

In 2010, players like LeBron James, Chris Bosh, and Dwayne Wade are all free agents. So are Paul Pierce and Ray Allen. The predicted major teams are the Knicks, Nets, and possibly the Pistons. There are many other teams like the Raptors and Suns that are trying to re-sign their star players like Chris Bosh and Amare Stoudemire.

Don't forget the Celtics. I am not saying they'll let go of Pierce, or else I would have to send a threatening letter to them, but Ray Allen is being payed $18,388,430 a year, and that's plenty enough for them to re-sign a smaller contract with Pierce, and then sign a player like Joe Johnson or Michael Redd.

Why not? I mean, if you offer Pierce a small contract with not as much money involved considering his age, and with Ray Allen's money being history, they would have plenty enough. Now, hold your horses, I am not saying they could sign a player like Amare Stoudemire or LeBron, but a player like Joe Johnson, or a player or TWO like a Manu Ginobili could be heading to Boston in a few years.

Then the Celtics could have Joe Johnson and Kevin Garnett, and then also have two potential all-stars in Big Baby and Rajon. What a team that would be. Of course, I don't have the financial numbers in front of me, and they would probably sign Johnson for only around three years because then they couldn't hold on to players like Tony Allen, Rondo, and Glen Davis. Or if they sign a player like Manu Ginobili or Josh Howard to play in place of Ray Allen, they could manage their money better and still have a few million dollars to spend on draft picks or role players.

I think we have said enough about possibilities for the Celtics, lets take some of those top players and put them on a team.

Dwayne Wade: Chicago Bulls - The Bulls dump a lot of cash in 2009 in which they get rid of Drew Gooden and Ben Gordan, and they would have a lot of cap space to sign a player like Wade. The interest for Wade here is a big city, a lot of money, a legacy, and Luol Deng. Deng was an intriguing player to Kobe Bryant, and maybe if the Lakers didn't argue for him, we wouldn't see Kobe in the yellow and purple.

Chris Bosh: New York Knicks - We all know the Knicks story and we all know their situation in the financial department, but there are different things that capture Bosh's eye here. The Knicks have good young players like Nate Robinson and David Lee. They have an up-tempo coach in Mike D'Antoni, which is just the type of game Bosh plays. The Knicks have enough money to sign another star player, which could show Bosh he would have help there.

LeBron James: New Jersey **cough cough Brooklyn cough** Nets - The Nets would have enough money moving to the new city to sign LeBron, although they don't dump Vince Carter, which would give James a side-kick in his new town. Now many Cavs fans say LeBron would never betray his home town in Cleveland, but if I'm not mistaken, his home town is Akron. Am I right? Or do I sound like a broken record. The owner is Jay Z, the shooting guard is Vince Carter, and the town is Brooklyn. 'Nuf said.

Amare Stoudemire: Houston Rockets - They have unbelievable amounts of money in 2010. They get rid of Artest in 2009, although they will probably keep him for another all-star player, and in 2010 they get ride of Yao and T-Mac. If they do get rid of Artest, the Knicks might not be the only team with buckets of cash, and the Rockets could sign another key player.

Michael Redd: Miami Heat - Getting rid of Wade in 2010 and Marion in '09, the Heat bring quite an offer to the table with them being able to offer two max contracts. Florida always attracts people, and their young players and their money could make the Heat one of the major players in 2010.

Richard Jefferson: Phoenix Suns - Don't be surprised if I say this team again, because they have CASH MONEY in 2010. They get rid of Stoudemire, Shaq, Steve Nash, and Raja Bell in that, giving them the opportunity to offer two max contracts and another big one for a good role player. The Suns are the sleeper in the year 2010, and they should be FLYING under the radar.

Yao Ming: Dallas Mavericks - The Mavs unload Josh Howard, Dirk, and Jason Kidd in the combined years 2010 and 2009, and with Mark Cuban still in the drivers seat, don't be surprised to see the Mavericks in the paper a couple times. They keep Yao in Texas, and they are able another superstar sidekick, as well as a max contract.

Tracy McGrady: Cleveland Cavaliers - The Cavs have...guess what...MONEY. Yes money. They are able to offer a huge contract to McGrady, and maybe Danny Ferry can finally prove himself to be aggressive to his team and town. Tracy will try to go in there and sweep Cavs fans off their feet after the loss of LeBron, but I hope he doesn't disappoint.

Joe Johnson: Boston Celtics - As I said before, the Celtics will have enough money to pair Johnson with Garnett and Pierce, and maybe offer a small contract to a good role player. This should intrigue Johnson's interest in winning a championship, and hopefully he can lead the Celtics to yet another championship.

So there it is. PART of the summer of 2010. There are of course many other players worth looking at, and don't be disappointed if i didn't mention another superstar, or even your team's name, I am sure most of the team's names will be mentioned. It will be a summer to remember, and maybe even a historic one. Too bad Kobe isn't in it.

"two potential all-stars in Big Baby and Rajon"

Rondo, yes. But do you really consider Glen "Big Baby" Davis a future all-star? Don't get me wrong. I love the guy. He's intense, he hustles, and he completely buys into the Celtics program. That said, because of his lack of rebounding and shot-blocking abilities, he'll be lucky to be in the league in five years.

Perhaps you were thinking of Kendrick Perkins. Or Leon Powe?

No I wasn't thinking of Kendrick or Leon. I can understand what you are saying, but if you look closely, Glen Davis is what seems to be the Wes Unseld of this generation. I mean, he's small center who gets garbage points, rebounds, and is athletic. On the fast break he will be very valuable in the future, because he can outrun guys as well as out-position them. After all, he was a high school running back.

Davis is an intriguing player who certainly has a high upside. Whether he reaches it remains to be seen but his width and strength are so great he may just wear down other team's interior defenders. I view him as a poor man's Charles Barkely. It is hard for me to se Leon Powe improving much though he will be a fine complimentary player
