FB University: Terrible Tuesday … Nick Saban’s Press Conference
How many things in our lives or that we have been told about can be called catastrophic ? Pearl Harbor or 9/11 come to mind right away, but there could be others that might not have been as big, but have affected us like the two mentioned. Well, thanks to the Head Coach of Alabama Nick Saban, you can add the Crimson Tide losing to Louisiana-Monroe to these events ! Yes, reading on the internet, from what is being reported, Nick Saban decided to say in his press conference that “Changes in history usually occur after some kind of catastrophic event. It may be 9-11, which sort of changed the spirit of America relative to catastrophic events. Pearl Harbor kind of got us ready for World War II, and that was a catastrophic event.” [1]
I have just one comment from reading that: Are we kidding ? This is football, a game, no one died, no families lost dear ones, nothing changed in us as a nation because Alabama lost to Louisiana-Monroe. Actually, maybe this might come as a surprise to Saban and his followers, but someone of us do not mind seeing him lose after what he did to the Dolphins. Of course at `Bama they are putting their own spin on it, how this was not meant to be given as a parallel, how this was not meant to be said as being the same. Well, here is an idea about that, if you are not using it to compare the two things, do not talk about it !
The Head Coach also said this at his press conference: “They talk about alcoholics and people like that who never ever change until they hit rock bottom Well, they change because when they hit rock bottom they have an awareness, they have an acceptance and a commitment to change. That’s what our players need to do right now because in the past two weeks since the LSU game, I haven’t seen the same spirit, I haven’t seen the same work ethic.” [2] I know I might be nitpicking here, but what does someone that has an addiction have to do with a team that is underachieving ? I have to tell you, I am pretty confused by these comments. Almost like the HC did not know what to say and just wanted to give the media this look at his team as though “it’s bad, but it won’t get worse”.
In all honesty this is not just about Saban, so many in the sports field use words that they should not. I have watched a golfing event and heard the announcers says “that shot took courage to take”. Or watching a game and hearing the words “heroic” while describing an athletic move/play. With all due respect to these announcers that are much more well versed than I will ever be, but enough with them words, let’s save them for the young men and women that are overseas right now protecting us, those are the courageous heroes of this day and age, not a sports player.
In the end I have to say that maybe just maybe we should step back a second and put things in perspective. When you are talking about football do not give it the same weight as things that will always be talked about. But if you need an example about that Mr. Saban just think about this, centuries later they still talk about Benedict Arnold and what he did, while most people have already stopped talking about what you did to the Dolphins.
