Football University: Historical first as Tim Tebow wins the Heisman

History was made last night at the Downtown Athletic Club in New York City when the voters decided that age did not matter and gave the Heisman trophy to the man that deserved it. I thought that Darren McFadden should have won it but I don’t have any problem whatsoever with seeing Tim Tebow win it. The sophomore quarterback from the University of Florida had an exceptional season and in the end it is nice to see that the “underclassman shouldn’t win it” mentality has been set aside. Now if they could do the same for the “defensive player shouldn’t win it” mentality the Heisman would truly be a great award to receive.

I guess you could say it was fitting that Tebow thanked some people twice when he received the trophy, because if he keeps playing the way he has he could be back to take another piece of hardware in the upcoming year. Tebow received 1,957 points and 462 first-place votes to McFadden’s 1,703 points and 291 first-place votes. Hawaii’s Colt Brennan came in third and Chase Daniel (Missouri) rounded out the field. But besides being the first ever underclassman to win this award Tebow also did something that hadn’t been done in a while.

The Gators’ quarterback took home the trophy even with a 9-3 season that saw him and the team stumble early in the year. That is a change in the trend, for the last 6 (out of 7) winners had received the award on their way to play for the National Title. Then again, with the way the season went in 2007 does anything really surprise you anymore?

Let’s not take anything away from Tebow. Yes, McFadden is going to be the best player of the four in New York City last night when they make the jump into the National Football League. Daniel and Brennan both threw for 4,000 yards this year and both did all they could do for their team. But none of the three, nor any player in Division I did more for his team than Tebow. He accumulated a total of 3,970 yds this season, scoring 51 TDs. He never had a really bad game during the season and was the leader of his team while only being a sophomore.

Tebow completed 68% of his attempts for 3,132 yards and 29 touchdowns. With the lack of a reliable back, the young qb led Florida with 838 yards rushing and set an SEC record with 22 touchdowns. As you read that just remember that Tebow will be back for one (or maybe two) years of college football. If he keeps it up he might just be back one or two more times to receive another trophy.
