Football University: Preview of the Hawaii Bowl
Welcome to the “who cares who wins I am in Hawaii” bowl, also known as the “Hawaii Bowl”. The two winners of this bowl are Boise State (10-2) and East Carolina (7-5), who by the way have the best head coach that no one is giving a shot to, Skip Holtz. These two teams got to Hawaii because Colt Brennan and company were sent packing to the Sugar Bowl and that opened up a spot for heaven on earth.
Boise State is making its sixth straight bowl appearance and second in a row outside of their blue field. The Broncos, 4-2 in bowl games since moving up to Division IA. And whil I think that Holtz is a great coach that should be considered for bigger programs than ECU, Boise State’s coach is also being looked at for jobs. Both of these coaches will be moving sooner rather than later in their careers.
As far as this game is concerned, this is going to be a game that unfortunately will turn ugly soon after beginning. Boise State had the better season, it had better competition, it has the better athletes and by the end of the game it will have the better score of the two teams on the field. The Broncos’ defense was best in the conference and their offense was second best to the high flying Hawaii team of Colt Brennan, and if that does not say something I do not know what else to talk about.
For East Carolina it will be all on the back, or better said, the legs of Chris Johnson. The young man helped the team both on the ground with 1,200+ yds and 16 touchdowns as well as with his hands, catching 34 passes for 496 yards and five scores. If Boise State can stop Johnson this will be even more lopsided than I thought. I think that the running back will get his 100 yards, and maybe even a couple of TDs, but it still won’t be enough to match what Boise State will come out with. All of the panelists of the Power Picks have the Broncos winning this game. Vegas does as well, as a 101/2 points favorite. I think the reality is that the Broncos will beat the Pirates by 3 touchdowns.
