Football University: Gator Bowl recap

I’m not sure what I can say about the Gator Bowl. I kept watching Virginia out in the lead, staying in the lead, but when it was all said and done Texas Tech won the game 31 to 28 on a late field goal. I’m still shaking my head, even after re-watching the game and looking at the highlights I’m not sure what happened, but whatever it was I’m not sure UVa saw it coming just like I didn’t. This game was set for a Virginia victory, as the score was 24 to 14 into the fourth quarter, then three scores, and that was that.

Red Raiders Graham Harrell managed to set Gator Bowl records for yards, completions and attempts even when it seemed he wasn’t doing much during the game, but we all must remember that the game lasts four quarters and not 3. Between Harrell going to work on UVa’s defense and a bad mistake by Virgina’s backup quarterback Peter Lalich, fumbling close to his own endzone, the game turned right around and what seemed to me a sure win for the Cavs became a bad loss when
they watched Red Raiders’ kicker Alex Trlica hit from 41 yards with 2 seconds remaining.

I have to say that this game wasn’t to my liking at all, the game seemed over at half time. In the third quarter there was just one score by Texas Tech, but then Virginia scored and once again went up by 14 and I thought it was over. But that is “why they play the game”, and that is something that both Virginia and myself should have thought as Texas Tech didn’t give up and took it to their opponents. The faces on the sidelines said a lot in this game. The same players you saw celebrating for most of the game, looked almost more confused than defeated when it was all said and done. Like they didn’t understand what had happened.

Now all that needs to be figured out is if this was a great comeback or a bad let down. Probably, depending on who you ask, they will all have a different opinion. I think that if you can’t take home a 14 point lead in the last quarter than you let down, so that is my vote for this game.
