Fall/Winter League Updates

West Oahu

  • Greg Burns: 0/4 2k... hitting .308

Mesa

  • Scott Cousins: 1/4 k cs po... hitting .125
  • Logan Morrison: 0/1 k

Here's a few more blurbs courtesy of Mike Berardino's blog

  • 3B Matt Dominguez, the Marlins' first-rounder in 2007, had arthroscopic surgery to remove a bone chips from his left (non-throwing) elbow. He'll be fine after 3-4 weeks of rehab. Not a big deal, should be fine. Easily a Marlins top 10 prospect
  • John Raynor, who just hit for the cycle in the Arizona Fall League, and fellow Mesa Solar Sox Scott Cousins will come to spring camp with a chance to fight for a big-league outfield job.  I don't think Raynor gets any major league job out of Spring, yet the front office loves him.
  • OF Brett Carroll has decided to play in the Dominican after missing much of the year with a shoulder injury suffered while running into a wall. ... 3B Dallas McPherson is considering a stint in the Dominican but hasn't made up his mind. .... Triple-A C Brett Hayes could wind up playing half a season in the Dominican if the Marlins can secure a job for him. ... OF Alejandro De Aza is "almost ready" in his endless return from ankle surgery.  Carroll could be a dark-horse for LF in 2009, but more than likely he'll get a shot at the bench. The Marlins love Brett Hayes, he could see some major league action in 2009. De Aza has no spot on this team
  • At the Marlins' request, big LHP Sean West will pitch out of the Mesa rotation while Double-A LHP Aaron Thompson will work out the 'pen. The Marlins are seeking to emulate the old Orioles Way of the '70s and early '80s when they would break in their young pitchers as relievers before easing them into the rotation. I hate the idea of working Thompson out of the pen, atleast at this stage in his career.

Hawaii Winter League Prospect To Watch

Greg Burns hasn't been touted too highly in his brief Marlins career. His numbers have yet to change the minds of evaluators like Baseball America and John Sickels. Scouts can't decide if they love him or hate him, but they do love his tools. Burns finally showed some of what scouts have been talking about since he was drafted a few years ago. He set career highs in batting average, obp, slg, ops, rbi, sb, walks, hits, doubles, and homeruns. He definitely showed some maturation as he left his teen years behind. One that that went up which was a bad thing was that his strikeout rate increased a little. His 122 strikeouts were 13 more than his previous high. Still, as he learns to judge the strikezone better, this should start to come down. The Marlins drafted Greg with the 98th overal pick (3rd round) of the 2004 amateur... Read more

On the mend: Sean West

The Marlins selected Sean West in the supplemental first round of the 2005 draft. The Shreveport native was signed to a $775,000 bonus. It didn’t take him long to prove to the Marlins he was worth the pick. In 38.1 innings in the Gulf Coast League as a 19 year old, West went 2-3 with a 2.35era and a 1.04whip. He was striking out more than a batter an inning and only walked 7. In his first start of 2006 in low-A Greensboro, Sean threw 6 shutout innings. He would then be put on the shelf for a month with nagging shoulder pain. He would come back to finish his season at 8-5 with a 3.74era and a 1.29whip. West came into the 2007 season rated in the top 3 Marlins prospects by many of the prospect pundits and was rated in a few of the top 100 overall prospects.... Read more
