Brian McCormick Interview

Over the past couple of months I’ve been fortunate enough to get to know Brian McCormick through some emails that we have thrown back and forth and last week I had the pleasure of recording an interview with him. During the interview we talked about his book “Cross Over: The New Model of Youth Basketball Development,” his DVD “Great Ball-Handling Made Easy” and he shared with me some of his experiences coaching in Sweden and Ireland.

Brian recently returned from coaching in Ireland and he talked about what motivated him to coach overseas in Sweden and Ireland, some of his favourite memories from this experience, some coaches that inspired him to get into coaching and he told me where he got his coaching philosophies from.

He wrote a book that has played a huge role in how I approach coaching my elementary school teams called so I was stoked to have the chance to chat with him about why the “the ultra competitive atmosphere hampers elite development,” why informal play is important to the development of young athletes and what motivated him to write a book for coaches.

This winter I was sent a copy of his DVD from Full Court Basketball that I’ve used with the teams I coach so I chatted with Brian what prompted him to release a DVD, what he enjoyed about creating a basketball DVD and why he decided to focus on dribbling for his first DVD.
