Mark Turgeon Interview
This winter I had the pleasure of interviewing Mark Turgeon who at the time was the head coach of the Wichita State Shockers basketball team. When we recorded this interview the Shockers were riding the wave of being known as the huge Cinderella team last March in the NCAA Tournament and had opened the season 5-0 to earn a spot in the top 5 of Sports Illustrated’s college hoops rankings.
With the news breaking this week that Turgeon had signed up to coach at Texas A&M I thought now was the perfect time to re-post this interview.
Some of the topics we covered during our interview include;
* Coach Turgeon was the first Jayhawk to play in four consecutive Final Fours and we talked about how his playing career at the University of Kansas helped to prepare him to become a coach
* He talked about what it was like being an assistant coach on Larry Brown’s staff for the 1988 National Championship team dubbed “Danny and the Miracles”
* Last season the Shockers made their first NCAA visit since 1988, won two NCAA games for the first time since 1981, took the Valley’s regular-season title for the first time since 1983, won the second-most amount of games (26) as any team in WSU history and made it to the postseason for a fourth straight year last season. Coach Turgeon talked about how he plans on building upon the success his program enjoyed last season.
