Another twist in the Milwaukee Mile saga

by Christopher Estrada on November 7, 2009

Just days after Historic Mile LLC backed out due to lack of money, another group appears set to take over the embattled Milwaukee Mile.

Frank and Dominic Giuffre, who promoted racing at the Mile back in the '80s and early '90s, appear set to sign a three-year promotions contract with the Wisconsin State Fair Park board, who agreed to work with them yesterday according to an article in today's Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. The Giuffre brothers' investor group also includes a very familiar name to IZOD IndyCar Series fans -- John Menard, whose Menards home improvement chain has served as a sponsor for Vision Racing in the last couple of seasons.

The Mile has had major problems trying to pay back their debt to NASCAR, which was the main reason why Historic Mile LLC pulled out earlier this week. A Tuesday piece in the Journal Sentinel said that Historic Mile had the funding to pay NASCAR for their 2010 dates but not for their events last year at the track. IndyCar never got their money for 2009 either, and as of now, they won't be heading for Beertown in 2010 as a result.

But if this contract gets signed, could there be a push from the Mile to get their spot on the schedule back for next season? We'll see...
