First, it was the reigning IndyCar Series and Indianapolis 500 champion.
Then, it was America’s last open-wheel heavyweight.
Now, it’s the Indy Racing League’s final link to its past. Scott Sharp, the 1996 co-champ and the only one that has raced all 146 events in series history, will go to the American Le Mans Series in 2008. He will co-drive the Highcroft Racing Acura-powered P2 machine alongside David Brabham.
As another blow to the IRL, Sharp will also take sponsor Patron Tequila with him to the sports car series. It’s the ending of a saga that began recently when the 39-year-old driver and the liquor company engaged Rahal Letterman Racing and team owner Bobby Rahal in a series of lawsuits. Citing lack of competitiveness, Sharp and Patron started the events, with Rahal suing back one week later for breach of contract.
