For a time, it looked like — or at least, sounded like — the Vision Racing team was going to drop two of their cars from last season and soldier on as a one-car squad in 2008 with Ed Carpenter at the wheel.
But instead, the fourth-year franchise will go with a two-car operation this season, with Carpenter and A.J. Foyt IV as their drivers and Tomas Scheckter heading to Luczo-Dragon Racing for a part-time gig. Carpenter, the step-son of IRL founder and Vision team owner Tony George, will stay in his familiar No. 20 machine and Foyt will move into Scheckter’s old ride, the No. 2 car.
In 2007, Vision got six top-10s out of Carpenter and three top-10s out of Foyt. But Carpenter feels that last season was a bit lacking in terms of realized potential and he says in the official press release that he is ready to bring home better runs for his team:
“…It seemed that more often than not we were the victim of bad luck last year and we’ve got to look to create our own good fortune this year. The potential, both in myself and the team are there, we just have to make it happen this season.”
Meanwhile, Foyt had his first full-time IndyCar gig since 2003 last season and attempted to get back into the rhythm of a full season. He said that after a year of re-acclimation, he’s set to get to work:
“Last season was really good for me in that I was able to prove to myself that I can be successful in these cars. After a taste of what the team and I can do together, I am excited about getting back out there this season and working together to be even better.”
Jeff Britton will take over as chief engineer for the team. Britton comes over from Rahal-Letterman Racing, where he was in the same role for Scott Sharp and his former No. 8 machine.
