Everybody’s in today at the Brickyard

With the two-day Rookie Orientation Program in the books, today marks the first day of official Indianapolis 500 practice as both veterans and newcomers take to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway oval.
Enrique Bernoldi of Conquest Racing became the 11th driver to pass all four speed phases of the ROP yesterday, while Mario Moraes of Dale Coyne Racing and Mario Dominguez of Pacific Coast Motorsports still must complete the final phase during the month after completing the first three yesterday. Also, Max Papis and Davey Hamilton finished their refreshers are set to go.
We also saw the first crash of the month yesterday with Conquest’s Jaime Camara having the dubious honor. He spun in Turn 1, smashed the SAFER Barrier and then skidded into Turn 2 before stopping. The Brazilian driver was taken to a hospital for observation after he complained of back pain, but X-rays were negative.
Today will see the teams take their first crack at putting up faster numbers, and with Pole Day looming on Saturday, we might see a bar set in terms of speed. That bar, of course, can very well be raised during the week.
