Andretti Green Promotions locks up Toronto Grand Prix
It took the need of a deadline extension, but Andretti Green Promotions has bought the Toronto Grand Prix with the intent to run it as an IndyCar Series event in 2009 under the new Andretti Green Toronto company.
The Canadian street race had been part of the CART/Champ Car schedule for over two decades, but was left out in the cold after the series merged with the Indy Racing League in February of 2008.
In a press release from AGR, seven-time Toronto winner Michael Andretti said he was “very excited” for the IndyCars to be coming to one of North America’s most important cities:
“[Toronto] is a terrific city and a great venue for Andretti Green to host another event. As a driver, Toronto was always my favorite race of the year and it will be no different as a promoter. The fans are some of the most enthusiastic you’ll ever be around and we’re looking forward to building on the great history of this event.”
Andretti Green Promotions also runs another street race on the IndyCar Series calendar — the Honda Grand Prix of St. Petersburg, Fla. Next year, it will become the second Canadian event on the schedule alongside the Grand Prix of Edmonton (Alberta).
