Prior to last night’s match-up against the Atlanta Falcons, we gave you a list of the top five things we were going to be looking for during the game. Since last night’s game was the preseason finale, and many of the players on the field would be competing for roster spots, we decided to focus on five players who were battling for a spot on the final roster. Here is our assessment of what we saw:

In a game that saw most of the starters wearing street clothes and watching from the sidelines, the Jacksonville Jaguars defeated the Atlanta Falcons, 13-9, in Thursday night’s preseason finale.
This was a game for backups and players fighting for roster spots to give their coaches and personnel departments one last look at what they can do. Each NFL team must trim its roster to the league-mandated 53-player limit by 6:00 p.m. Saturday.

The Jacksonville Jaguars take on the Atlanta Falcons tonight in the final game of the preseason. Since it is the final preseason game, the starting units for both teams will see little, if any, playing time. So instead of focusing on position groups, battles for starting jobs, and individuals who have already locked up a roster spot, we are turning our attention to players who have a lot to play for tonight. Players who will be fighting for their spot on the roster or practice squad…maybe even for their NFL careers. Here are the top five players we are going to be watching over the course of tonight’s game:

This is normally a Thursday feature, but with the Jaguars final preseason game against the Falcons being played Thursday night, we’ve moved it up one day. Here is your look at what others are saying about the Jaguars around the Web:
According to Vito Stellino, trimming the Jaguars’ roster makes for the longest week of the year for general manager Gene Smith.
Jaguars safety Reggie Nelson keeps a positive attitude throughout a tough offseason, writes Tania Ganguli.
Jaguars coach Jack Del Rio confirms that running back Maurice Jones-Drew did not have surgery.
The Jacksonville Jaguars have made several roster moves today in order to get down to the NFL-mandated 75-player roster limit.
The Jaguars waived four players: first-year center Cecil Newton, second-year defensive end Julius Williams, rookie cornerback Josh Gordy and rookie wide receiver Roren Thomas.
The Jaguars placed rookie defensive tackle D’Anthony Smith and center John Estes on injured reserve.
The team also signed rookie center Bradley Vierling to a contract. Vierling originally signed with the Pittsburgh Steelers as an undrafted rookie out of Vanderbilt, but was waived by the club in June.
Prior to Saturday night’s preseason game with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, we gave you a list of the top five things we were going to be watching during the contest. Here is our assessment on what we saw:
1. Free Safety - As we expected and told you about on Saturday, Reggie Nelson got the start at free safety against the Buccaneers and played the majority of snaps. Gerald Alexander saw very limited playing time as the Jaguars gave Nelson, what I believe, a long last look to not only see if he could win the starting spot, but to see if he could earn a spot on the final roster. Nelson did not do anything to distinguish himself, and I wonder how many days he has remaining as a member of the Jaguars.

The Jacksonville Jaguars picked up their first win of the preseason last night, defeating the Tampa Bay Buccaneers by the score of 19-13.
Backup quarterback Luke McCown threw a 27-yard touchdown pass to John Matthews on his first attempt of the game to put the Jaguars up for good late in the third quarter.
The Buccaneers were leading 13-19 when the starters exited the game, but the first-team units looked better in this game than they have the majority of the preseason.
Quarterback David Garrard wasn’t spectacular, but he played well, finishing the game having completed 24 of 31 passes for 211 yards and an 81.5 passer rating.

Yesterday, we told you that the National Football Post was reporting that Jaguars running back Maurice Jones-Drew had arthroscopic knee surgery and will moss the remainder of the preseason.
While Jones-Drew did not travel with the team to Tampa for tonight’s games, indicating he probably is done for the preseason, his agent tells Tania Ganguli of the Florida Times-Union that reports his client had surgery are untrue.
“Absolutely false,” Adisa Bakari told Ganguli. “Maurice did not have surgery.”
For his part, Jones-Drew has denied all week that he was injured, explaining the fact that he missed three consecutive practices this week as him simply needing a break from the preseason grind.
The Jacksonville Jaguars head to Tampa to take on the Buccaneers in tonight’s all-important third preseason game. Here are the top five things we are going to be watching over the course of the game:
1. Free Safety - It appears that Anthony Smith has locked up the strong safety job, but free safety is still wide open. Gerald Alexander has started the first two preseason games, but has yet to distinguish himself as the clear-cut starter, leaving the door open for Sean Considine and Reggie Nelson. In fact, it has been rumored that Nelson might get the starting nod tonight, giving him one more chance to show why the team should keep him on the roster.
