  1. Hey Jay,
I was curious about something I noticed in the Future 40. It shows Eziquiel Carerra to be higher rated than either Danny Carroll or Denny Almonte. This shocked me since I thought that Carp and Cleto were the primary prospects, Eziquiel just basically being a throw-in. Of course I will watch all of our prospects, but is he really one to watch?

  2. I think there’s some merit in Dave’s stance. Carrera is a left-handed bat for one thing, so bonus points for him, but he’s also had success at a higher level and has show far superior plate discipline. Almonte struck out once every 2.75 plate appearances and walked once every fourteen. Carroll put up a better ratio, but he walked only once every seventeen plate appearances or so while striking out every 4.2 PAs. By contrast, you can look at Carrera and see that he walks every ten and a half plate appearances and strikes only once every 5.7 PAs. So while Carrera is a little older, he’s also had that success at higher levels and his pitch recognition abilities suggest there’s more there to tap or he’ll at least be able to maintain some consistency as he moves up.
I’d say that they all grade pretty closely on tools anyway. Carroll probably has a better arm than Carrera, but Carrera seems likely to hit for more power (for now), plus the whole left-handed thing. Almonte has power to put both to shame, but his contact abilities are worrisome. He might have the most upside, but Carrera is the safest for the moment.
