A Minor Consideration

Spring Training Begins to Wrap Up

As the A’s played their final big-league Spring Training games of the season on Wednesday — dropping one to the Angels and beating the Cubs — a few glimpses of the future were shown off.

Minor-leaguers accounted for three of Oakland’s five hits — and the only run — against the Los Angeles Angels of Geographical Contractual Obligation. In the other split-squad game, 2007 draft pick Corey Brown hit the game-winner against the National Leaguers from Chicago.

Josh Horton, Brian Stavisky, Danny Putnam, Sean Doolittle, Cliff Pennington, Eddie Cornejo, Corey Brown, Gregorio Petit, Justin Sellers, Nick Blasi, Chris Carter and Jermaine Mitchell all got into games on Wednesday. Perhaps it was just to reward the hard work all have put in this spring in minor-league camp, but still, you’d be wise to keep their names in mind. All could see big-league playing time in their futures, and some could be stars.

While the Major Leaguers are now headed off to Japan to play, the farm system keeps on working. Camp will continue to be running as usual for another week before players begin to get their assignments for the season. Some will head to triple-A, double-A or single-A, while many others will remain at Papago Park for extended spring training — which is not nearly as much fun as it sounds like.

When rosters are announced, we’ll be here with the surprises and the rundown of who’s where. More on that soon, including some predictions based on minor-league camp assignments and practice squads.

Opening days for the minor-league affiliates is quickly approaching. The season begins for AAA, AA and A on April 3rd and 4th, while Vancouver begins play on June 17th and the Arizona A’s start the season at the end of June, following extended spring training.

Certainly looking forward to predictions on who is on which roster etc. Cannot wait for the minor league seasons to begin. That is especially true this year with all the talent that the club has acquired during the offseason. Keep up the good work, Ryan.
