Billy Buckner (Tucson) W (2-3), 7 IP, 7 H, 2 ER, 4/1 K/BB (5.29) - 4th straight quality start
Jarrod Parker (South Bend) W (4-1), 6 IP, 6 H, 3 ER, 7/2 K/BB (1.71)

Tucson 5 - Tacoma 2

Billy Buckner pitched 7 strong innings to win his 2nd game of the season. Buckner allowed 2 runs on 7 hits and a walk. He struck out 4 in his 4th straight quality start. In his last 4 starts, he has allowed just 5 earned runs in 27 innings for a 1.66 ERA. Leo Rosales pitched 2 scoreless innings for his 4th save.

Chad Tracy was back in rehab after missing a few games with sickness. Playing 1B, he was 1-5 with 2 RBIs. Emilio Bonifacio was 1-2 with 3 walks while Jamie D’Antona hit 2 more doubles and has 16 for the season, 3rd best in the league. The 3rd baseman’s .423 average is second only to Las Vegas’s Terry Tiffee.

Tracy 1B 1-5, 2 RBI (.158)
Bonifacio 2B 1-2, 3 BB, RBI, R (.292)
D’Antona 3B 2-4, 2 2B (.423)

Buckner (W 2-3) 7 IP, 7 H, 2 ER, 4 K, BB (5.29)
Rosales (SV 4) 2 IP, 1 H, 0 ER, K (4.87)
Mobile (Off Day)
Visalia 4 - Lancaster 3

Tyler Jones doubled in Brad Miller with 2 outs in the 7th to break a 3-3 tie as the Oaks won their 3rd straight against the JetHawks. Miller was 2-4 with a homer, 2 RBIs and 2 runs scored. It was just the first baseman’s 2nd homer of the season, a disappointing number considering that he hit 22 for the Silver Hawks last year.

The win went to Scott Maine, who pitched 2 scoreless innings in relief of starter Barry Enright. Enright gave up 3 runs on 7 hits in 5 innings. Kyler Newby pitched a perfect 9th for his 3rd save.

Miller 1B 2-4, HR (2), 2 RBI, 2 R, E (2) (.159)
Ed Easley C 2-4, K (.305)
Gerardo Parra RF 1-4, 2B, R (.303)

Enright 5 IP, 7 H, 3 ER, 5 K, BB (7.02)
Maine (W 1-0) 2 IP, 1 H, 0 ER, 5 K, BB (3.60)
Jorge Perez 1 IP, 2 H, 0 ER (5.71)
Newby (SV 3) 1 IP, 0 H, 0 ER, K (1.40)

South Bend 5 - Great Lakes 3

Jarrod Parker overcame a tough start to pitch a quality start and earn his 4th win of the season. Parker’s scoreless streak of 12 innings came quickly to an end when he gave up an RBI triple and then a 2-run homer in the 1st inning. But he settled down and started a new streak with 5 shutout innings after that. His offense tied the game with 2 runs in the 2nd inning and scored twice more in the 6th to give him the win. Chance Wheeless’s first homer (also his first hit) as a Silver Hawks leading off the 6th was the winning run. Evan Frey singled in an extra run later in the same inning.

Bryan Henry and Evan Scribner set down all 9 batters they faced, with Scribner getting his 3rd save. The Silver Hawks have won 6 of their last 7 and 8 of their last 10 games.

Wheeless DH 1-3, HR (1), BB, RBI, 2 R (.091)
Frey CF 1-5, RBI, CS (5) (.362)
Matt Oxendine SS 2-5, 2B, RBI, R (.277)

Parker (W 4-1) 6 IP, 6 H, 3 ER, 7 K, 2 BB (1.71)
Henry 2 IP, 0 H, 0 ER, K (4.50)
Scribner (SV 3) 1 IP, 0 H, 0 ER, 2 K (2.45)

Bryan Augenstein (South Bend) W 1-1, 7 2/3 IP, 5 H, 1 ER, 6/1 K/BB (2.70) - 1st professional win

Tucson (Off Day)

Mobile 1 - Jacksonville 5

The BayBears made 3 errors enroute to a 5-1 loss to the Suns. Starter Adam Howard lasted just 4 1/3 innings, allowing 3 runs (2 earned) on 6 hits. 2 more runs scored off Reid Mahon in the 9th.

The offense got just 6 hits. Their best chance came in the first inning when they loaded the bases with 1 out, but only got a Brandon Burgess sac fly to show for it.

Yunesky Sanchez SS 2-4 (.359)
Frank Curreri LF 2-4 (.255)

Howard (L 3-2) 4 1/3 IP, 6 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 4 K, 3 BB (4.43)
Cody Evans 2 2/3 IP, 2 H, 0 ER, 2 K, BB (2.79)
AJ Shappi 1 IP, 2 H, 0 ER, 2 K (1.88)
Mahon 1 IP, 3 H, 2 ER, K (3.72)

Visalia 2 - Lancaster 0

Steve Mena’s solo homer in the 8th inning was the difference in a pitching duel between the Oaks and the JetHawks. Struggling starter Chase Christianson pitched his best game of the season, allowing just 3 hits in 7 shutout innings. The scoreless outing cut his ERA from a lofty 10.16 to 8.29, but he left with the game still scoreless as his offense managed just 1 hit through the first 7 innings. Leading off the bottom of the 8th, Mena’s 2nd homer of the season finally broke the deadlock. Brad Miller followed with a single and scored 2 outs later on Gerardo Parra’s triple.

The win went to Chad Beck who was stellar in 2 hitless innings. He walked just one while striking out 5.

Mena 3B 1-3, HR (2), RBI, R, K (.203)
Parra RF 1-4, 3B, RBI, K (.304)

Christianson 7 IP, 3 H, 0 ER, 3 K, 2 BB (8.29)
Beck (W 1-0) 2 IP, 0 H, 0 ER, 5 K, BB (1.04)

South Bend 5 - Great Lakes 1

When Bryan Augenstein is on, he is getting lots of groundballs and pitching deep into games. Augenstein got 15 groundouts on his way to 7 2/3 1-run innings to pick up his first career win. The 21-year-old righty allowed just 5 hits and a walk while striking out 6. He has pitched at least 7 innings in 4 of his 8 starts this year. He is 2nd in the league in innings pitched and 6th in strikeouts.

The offense gave him all the run support he would need in the 1st inning with 3 runs on 4 hits. Mike Mee, playing LF, was 3-4 with 2 RBIs while CF Evan Frey was 3-5 with an RBI. 3B Eli Rumler also had 3 hits. Mee is 2nd in the league in OBP (.429), 7th in hits (41) and has walked more times (24) than he has struck out (14). Frey is 2nd in batting average (.368) and 1st in hits (53)

Mee LF 3-4, BB, 2 RBI, R (.318)
Frey CF 3-5, RBI, R (.368)
Rumler 3B 3-4, BB, R (.227)

Augenstein (W 1-1) 7 2/3 IP, 5 H, 1 ER, 6 K, BB (2.70)
Bill Spottiswood 1 1/3 IP, 3 H, 0 ER, 2 K, BB (2.45)

For the week of 5th - 11th May

Tucson
Weekly Record : 1-6
Overall Record : 11-27 (4th & last PCL Pacific South, 10 1/2 games behind)
Runs Scored - Runs Allowed : 23-47

After a hot stretch, the Sidewinders went back to their earlier ways, dropping 6 of the 7 games in the week and getting outscored handily. Things are looking pretty bleak in their last season in Tucson.

Who’s Hot
Jamie D’Antona 3B 9-17 (.529) 3 HR, 4 RBI, 6 R, 1/1 K/BB, 1.614 OPS
Jesus Merchan SS 12-23 (.522), 1 2B, 4 RBI, 2 R, 1/0 K/BB, 1.104 OPS
Trot Nixon LF 5-16 (.313) 1 HR, 2 2B, 4 RBI, 3 R, 2/1 K/BB, .978 OPS
Josh Whitesell 1B 7-23 (.304) 2 HR, 1 2B, 2 RBI, 5 R, 6/1 K/BB, .942 OPS

D’Antona just keeps on hitting, even showing some power last week with 3 homers in his last 4 games. There isn’t space on the D-backs roster for him at the moment, especially with Chad Tracy starting his rehab last week, but his ability to catch could make him a valuable bench player later in the season.
Merchan has a 15 game hitting streak where he is hitting .439 (25-57)

Who’s Not
Emilio Bonifacio 2B 3-26 (.115), 1 2B, 1 R, 6/0 K/BB, .269 OPS
Trent Oeltjen LF/RF 3-22 (.136), 1 HR, 1 2B, 2 RBI, 1 R, 5/0 K/BB, .455 OPS
Tim Raines Jr RF/CF 4-18 (.222), 1 RBI, 1 R, 3/1 K/BB, .485 OPS
Dustin Glant 0-1, 3 2/3 IP, 13 H, 10 ER, 7/4 K/BB, 24.55 ERA, 4.64 WHIP
Leo Rosales 3 IP, 6 H, 6 ER, 3/0 K/BB, 18.00 ERA, 2.00 WHIP
Emiliano Fruto 2 1/3 IP, 1 H, 3 ER, 3/4 K/BB, 11.57 ERA, 2.14 WHIP
Evan MacLane 0-1, 4 IP, 9 H, 7 R, 5 ER, 2/1 K/BB, 11.25 ERA, 2.50 WHIP

Plenty of ugly pitching numbers, especially from the bullpen.

Mobile
Weekly Record : 2-5
Overall Record : 17-20 (Tied 2nd Southern League South, 3 games behind)
Runs Scored - Runs Allowed : 41-44

After briefly tying for the division lead last week, the BayBears lost 4 of 5 to the League’s best team, the Huntsville Stars to drop back in the leaderboard. They had no problems scoring runs, but couldn’t prevent their opponents from scoring either.

Who’s Hot
Rusty Ryal 2B 11-25 (.440) 4 HR, 3 2B, 11 RBI, 9 R, 3/2 K/BB, 1.557 OPS
Bryan Byrne 1B 12-25 (.480) 2 HR, 1 2B, 4 RBI, 6 R, 2/3 K/BB, 1.296 OPS
John Hester C 7-21 (.333) 2 HR, 1 3B, 2 2B, 6 RBI, 4 R, 5/0 K/BB, 1.143 OPS
Cyle Hankerd RF/LF 10-26 (.385) 1 HR, 1 2B, 6 RBI, 4 R, 3/0 K/BB, .967 OPS
Matt Torra 1-0, 6 IP, 7 H, 1 ER, 5/2 K/BB, 1.50 ERA, 1.50 WHIP

7 of Ryal’s 11 hits went for extra bases and he led the team in RBIs and runs scored. He was named the Southern League Player of the Week for his great hitting.

Who’s Not
Chris Rahl CF 6-27 (.222), 2 RBI, 2 R, 10/1 K/BB, .472 OPS
Forrest Cory 2 2/3 IP, 7 H, 7 R, 6 ER, 1/1 K/BB, 20.25 ERA, 3.00 WHIP
Tony Barnette 0-2, 11 1/3 IP, 18 H, 11 ER, 4/4 K/BB, 8.74 ERA, 1.94 WHIP
Brooks Brown 0-1, 9 2/3 IP, 15 H, 9 ER, 3/2 K/BB, 8.38 ERA, 1.76 WHIP

Visalia
Weekly Record : 4-2
Overall Record : 18-19 (Tied 4th California League North, 7 games behind)
Runs Scored - Runs Allowed : 26-29

The Oaks completed a successful trip, winning 2 of 3 in Stockton and San Jose. They went out to prove that when you score is as how many you score. They were blanked in both their losses (0-14 and 0-8), but out-scored their opponents 26-7 to win the other 4 games.

Who’s Hot
Jo Jo Batten RF/CF 9-20 (.450) HR, 2B, 1 RBI, 3 R, 2/5 K/BB, 1.210 OPS
Ed Easley C 9-23 (.391) 2 HR, 5 RBI, 6 R, 4/2 K/BB, 1.075 OPS
Peter Clifford LF 5-20 (.250), 2 3B, 2B, 2 RBI, 5 R, 9/4 K/BB, .923 OPS
Eddie Romero 1-0, 6 2/3 IP, 5 H, 0 ER, 7/0 K/BB, 0.00 ERA, 0.75 WHIP
Barry Enright 1-0, 6 IP, 5 H, 1 ER, 6/0 K/BB, 1.50 ERA, 0.83 WHIP

Who’s Not
Brad Miller 1B 3-19 (.158), 2B, 3 RBI, 4/0 K/BB, .368 OPS
Manuel Ferrer 2B 5-22 (.227), 1 RBI, 1 R, 6/1 K/BB, .488 OPS
Chase Christianson 0-1, 1 2/3 IP, 8 H, 7 ER, 2/2 K/BB, 37.80 ERA, 6.00 WHIP
Leyson Septimo 2 2/3 IP, 5 H, 5 ER, 4/3 K/BB, 16.88 ERA, 3.00 WHIP

South Bend
Weekly Record : 4-1
Overall Record : 13-20 (6th and last Midwest League Eastern, 6 games behind)
Runs Scored - Runs Allowed : 25-20

A winning week and the Silver Hawks no longer have the worst record in the league and have made up 2 games in the standings. Even having 2 games rained out didn’t cool down the Hawks who have won 6 of their last 8.

Who’s Hot
Sean Coughlin C/DH 9-21 (.429) 2 HR, 4 2B, 10 RBI, 3 R, 0/1 K/BB, 1.383 OPS
Taylor Harbin 2B 11-23 (.478), 3B, 4 2B, 4 RBI, 4 R, 0/0 K/BB, 1.217 OPS
Aaron Hanke LF 4-13 (.308), 2 HR, 5 RBI, 3 R, 1/1 K/BB, 1.103 OPS
Mike Mee 1B 5-18 (.278), HR, 2 2B, 3 RBI, 6 R, 0/5 K/BB, .990 OPS
Cristian Beltre 2-0, 14 IP, 11 H, 4 ER, 9/2 K/BB, 2.57 ERA, 0.93 WHIP
Jarrod Parker 1-0, 5 IP, 3 H, 0 ER, 2/2 K/BB, 0.00 ERA, 1.00 WHIP
Evam Scribner 1-0, 3 IP, 1 H, 0 ER, 4/0 K/BB, 0.00 ERA, 0.33 WHIP

Coughlin has been making things look easy since joining the Silver Hawks. The catcher has bashed out 8 extra-base hits in his first 25 at-bats and had 10 RBIs for the week, earning him the Midwest League Player of the Week.
Mee is not your typical first baseman. With a great eye at the plate, he drew 5 walks without striking out in the week and for the season has 23 walks with just 13 Ks.
Beltre won both his starts last week and has thrown 4 straight quality starts.

Who’s Not
Matt Oxendine SS 2-13 (.154), 1 RBI, 1 R, 3/2 K/BB, .421 OPS
Derrick Walker RF 2-17 (.118), 2B, 1 R, 6/1 K/BB, .426 OPS
Josh Blake 2 IP, 3 H, 3 ER, 1/1 K/BB, 13.50 ERA, 2.00 WHIP
Josh Collmenter 0-1, 4 IP, 5 H, 5 ER, 4/2 K/BB, 11.25 ERA, 1.75 WHIP

Tucson 2 - Memphis 7

Doug Davis has a nice rehab start for the Sidewinders but takes the loss due to the lack of support and bullpen help. Davis pitched 4 2/3 innings, allowing 2 runs on 6 hits and a walk. He struck out 3 while throwing 85 pitches, 50 for strikes.

Jamie D’Antona hit a solo homer, his 3rd of the season and is hitting .412. He did make his 6th error though.

The game was close until the 9th when the BayBears scored 7 times including a grand slam from Cyle Hankerd. Hankerd finished with 5 RBIs. Ryal was 2-4 and scored 3 times. Yunesky Sanchez was 4-6 and is batting a team-leading .383.

The Oaks offense scored single runs in the 2nd and 4th inning before taking the lead for good in the 5th on a 3-run homer by Ricardo Sosa against former D-back prospect Brett Anderson. Jo Jo Batten had an inside-the-park homer in the 4th.

South Bend 6 - Fort Wayne 5 (11 innings)

The Silver Hawks are certainly enjoying the presence of their newest catcher as Sean Coughlin doubled in the winning run in the 11th inning and wound up with 4 RBIs on the day. In his first 5 games in a Silver Hawks uniform, Coughlin has 8 hits (2 homers and 5 doubles) in 18 at-bats and 10 RBIs. He has struck out just once while walking 3 times. Playing DH for the first time, reached on a force attempt in the 1st inning for his 1st RBI. He then came up with the bases loaded in the 5th and singled in 2 more runs.

The walkoff RBI double gave Evan Scribner his first win of the season. Scribner gave up just a hit in 3 scoreless innings of relief, striking out 4 and walking none. Starter Bryan Augenstein struck out 8 in 5 2/3 innings, allowing 4 runs on 8 hits and a walk. Tom Layne had an interesting 8th. He struck out the first 2 batters, walked the next 3 to load the bases before striking out the side to escape without any damage.

For the week of 28th April - 4th May

Tucson
Weekly Record : 5-2
Overall Record : 10-21 (4th & last PCL Pacific South, 6 1/2 games behind)
Runs Scored - Runs Allowed : 51-30

The Sidewinders have won 7 of their last 9 games. Nothing like a series in Albuquerque to warm up the offense. After splitting 4 games with Round Rock, the Sidewinders went to Albuquerque and spanked the Isotopes in the first 3 games by a score of 40-17.

Who’s Hot
Trot Nixon LF/RF 9-17 (.529), 2 HR, 2B, 3 RBI, 5 R, 2/5 K/BB, 1.578 OPS
Jamie D’Antona 3B/1B/C 13-22 (.591), HR, 2 2B, 6 RBI, 4 R, 2/0 K/BB, 1.409 OPS
Trent Oeltjen CF/RF/LF 9-17 (.529), 3 2B, 1 RBI, 6 R, 4/3 K/BB, 1.306 OPS
Josh Whitesell 1B 7-25 (.280), 3 HR, 2 2B, 10 RBI, 8 R, 7/5 K/BB, 1.120 OPS
Alex Romero CF 11-29 (.379), 2 HR, 2B, 5 RBI, 7 R, 3/1 K/BB, 1.040 OPS
Emilio Bonifacio 2B 16-37 (.432), 4 RBI, 6 R, 4/1 K/BB, .868 OPS
Jesus Merchan SS 11-29 (.379), 3 2B, 7 RBI, 5 R, 4/0 K/BB, .862 OPS
Billy Buckner RHP 1-1, 14 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 7/4 K/BB, 0.64 ERA, 0.57 WHIP
Juan Gutierrez RHP 1-0, 7 IP, 4 H, 3 R, 1 ER, 1/2 K/BB, 1.29 ERA, 0.86 WHIP
Leo Rosales RHP 2 Saves, 2 IP, 0 H, 0 ER, 2/0 K/BB, 0.00 ERA, 0.00 WHIP
Jailen Peguero RHP 1 Save, 2 2/3 IP, 2 H, 0 ER, 3/0 K/BB, 0.00 ERA, 0.75 WHIP

Again lots of hot bats on the team with the outfield trio of Nixon, Oeltjen and Romero leading the way. D’Antona is hitting .400/.411/.552 for the season while playing both corner infield positions as well as catch.
