Game Recaps (5/7/08)

There are a few quick things to note before I get rolling with this (it’s a sweep anyway). Churchill has a report in the P-I on T-Rats right-hander Juan Ramirez, Slate has an article going into some detail on the Dominican Summer League (VSL starts up next week, in case anyone’s wondering), and word out of the M’s camp is that they’ve released LHP Eric Cyr and C Julian Henson, who was never quite able to break into a full-season team. Now, on with the recaps…

Tacoma 3, Iowa 4 (CHC - 4)
The experiment of RHP R.A. Dickey (3.25, L) and the knuckleball appears to still be a work in progress. In this outing, he went seven and two-thirds innings and had four runs score against him on ten hits and two walks while he struck out four. RHP Andy Baldwin (5.82) allowed a hit before recording the final out.
2B Yung-chi Chen (SB, .274), RF Shawn Garrett (R, .318), 1B Bryan LaHair (2 R, .294), and SS Oswaldo Navarro (RBI, .307) all had two singles, as there were no extra-base hits for the Rainiers, and Garrett had two walks while Chen had one.

Mississippi 7 (ATL - 13), West Tenn 5
Making his first appearance in affiliated ball in two years (I think?), RHP Denny Stark (1.93) pitched four and two-thirds innings and gave up a run on five hits, a hit batter, and two walks while striking out one. RHP Marwin Vega (6.30) got his usual appearance in relief, but did rather poorly, giving up four runs on four hits, a walk, and a K in an inning and a third of work. LHP Jason Mackintosh (3.21, BS, L) scored two of those along with one more of his own on two hits, two hit batters, and two Ks in two innings of work, but RHP Brodie Downs (5.51) scored one of Mac’s runs and one more after two hits and a K in the final two-thirds of an inning.
There was a bit of variety from the offense tonight, as CF Prentice Redman (HR, 2 RBI, .221) and RF Johan Limonta (HR, .333) both had home runs, with Limonta adding a walk, 1B Marshall Hubbard (2B, RBI, .373) and DH Mike Wilson (2B, R, .257) both doubled, and 2B Luis Valbuena (R, SB, .315) walked twice.

High Desert 4, Lancaster 6 (BOS - 3)
The Mavericks wasted a fine outing by LHP Nick Hill (4.22), who went five innings and let one run score on four hits and two walks while he struck out seven. RHP Alfredo Venegas (4.40) pitched an inning and two-thirds after that, allowing another run to score on four hits and a hit batter while he struck out three. LHP Michael Wagner (3.12, BS, L) ended up losing control of the game when he allowed three runs to plate on three hits in an inning of work, though RHP Shawn Kelley (0.00) would score one of those and have an unearned run score against him on one hit before he recorded the final out of the eighth.
LF James McOwen (3B, 2 R, E, .281), DH Chris Minaker (2B, RBI, .298), and CF Gregory Halman (HR, SB, .269) all had two hits on the night, with one extra base hit for each of them. That was Halman’s sixth home run of the season, but he struck out on three of his other four plate appearances. 3B Matt Mangini (HR, .228) also hit a longball, his second of the year. RF Carlos Peguero (E, .292) had three singles and 1B Erick Monzon (.400) had a hit and two walks.

Thanks for the reminder on the VSL. Their 2007 debut slipped past me last season.

I wonder why Feiner was tabbed as the catching fill-in at Tacoma. I know it’s on Rob Johnson to assume the top catching duties now, but I figured if they were going to bring up a backup, it would’ve been Oliveros. Maybe they didn’t have anybody in High Desert to take Oliveros’ place so they just shuttled Feiner up since he’s fodder and shouldn’t play much anyway?

Pretty much. The system has been left a little thin on available catching, didn’t sign anyone special in the offseason and those they do have around they’re trying to be careful with. Feiner, on the other hand, is an org catcher, not much more, and can be moved around as much as they need. Yepez in High Desert fills a similar role, but Scott had a few minor injuries, so it was harder to move him. Far easier to bring in a catcher who was in short-season last year to Wisconsin.

Plus since Tacoma was playing in Iowa, it was pretty easy to bring a guy over from Wisconsin for the day game (and maybe even send him back in time for the T-Rats game).

No, that sort of thing doesn’t happen, or at least not that I’ve ever heard of. They brought up Israel Nunez from extended, that’s all.
