Game Recaps (7/22/08)

Fair warning: I’m going to be out of town from Friday through Monday, though I may be back early enough on Monday to catch the Aquasox game. I’m not quite sure yet. Recaps will be up probably in some abridged form after I get back. I’m also going to be in New York on August 6th and 7th, so don’t expect anything until at least the 8th depending on how jetlagged I am.

Tacoma 5, Nashville 2 (MIL - 23)
LHP Jake Woods (4.14) took Baldwin’s spot in the rotation and went five innings, allowing five hits and a walk while striking out five. RHP Tracy Thorpe (9.14, BS, W) blew it by letting two runs score on four hits, two wild pitches, two walks, and four Ks, but picked up the win as the Rainiers rallied. RHP Randy Messenger (4.50, S) allowed one hit in the ninth. Former M’s farmhand Troy Cate took the loss.
No home runs in the game, but there were two hits apiece from LF Wladimir Balentien (2 2B, R, RBI, .266), 1B Shawn Garrett (2B, RBI, .289), and C Rob Johnson (2B, R, .290), with Wlad and Johnson adding walks, and 3B Matt Tuiasosopo (2B, R, RBI, .265) and 2B Luis Valbuena (2B, R, RBI, .197) both had doubles.

West Tenn’s game was rained out. The doubleheader is scheduled for Thursday, even though they’re playing an early game tomorrow.

Inland Empire 9 (LA + 3), High Desert 10
RHP Alfredo Venegas (5.08) was roughed up through five innings, giving up six runs on eight hits (HR), two balks, three walks, and four Ks. LHP Nick Hill (4.79) pitched the next inning and a third and let three more plate after three hits, a walk, and two Ks. RHP Bryan Harris (7.31) allowed a hit in an inning of work and RHP Stephen Richard (3.60, W) walked two, threw two wild pitches, hit two, and struck out three over the final inning and two-thirds for the win.
The game had its ups and downs, and was ultimately decided when SS Carlos Triunfel (2B, 4 R, 2 SB, .264), who was 3-for-5, singled and moved on to third on a couple of wild pitches before scoring on a sacrifice by C Jose Yepez (R, 2 RBI, PB, .277), who had a single and a walk. DH James Davenport (2B, .500) also had three hits, 1B Ron Prettyman (HR, 2 RBI, .303), LF-CF Kuo-hui Lo (HR, 2 R, 3 RBI, .254), and 2B Ogui Diaz (HR, 2 RBI, CS, .262) all had a single and a home run, with Prettyman and Diaz adding walks, and 3B Joe Simokaitis (2B, R, .366) had a double. It was the seventh home run for Lo, the fourth at the level for Prettyman, and the third for Diaz.  Also, Dickey and Horner were thrown out arguing a close play at first when Dickey was called out on what may have been a bunt single.

Everett 4, Boise 5 (CHC + 9)
RHP Stephen Hensley (4.97, E) pitched five innings and let two runs score on three hits, two wild pitches, two walks, and five Ks. RHP Douglas Salinas (5.53) took the loss after giving up three runs (two earned) on three hits (HR), a walk, and a K in an inning and a third. RHP Matt Renfree (2.19) scored one of those, giving up a hit and a walk while striking out a pair in the final inning and two-thirds.
3B Nate Tenbrink (HR, .230) hit a home run, his fifth of the season, 2B Luis Nunez (2B, RBI, CS, .345) and C Fleming Baez (3B, R, RBI, .255) both had two hits, and DH Kevin Reynolds (2B, .361) doubled and walked.

Pulaski 0, Danville 1 (ATL + 5) (six innings)
RHP Brooks Mohr (2.60, L) had a complete game, technically, but also took the loss after giving up a run on seven hits, a wild pitch, a hit batter, a walk, and three Ks.
The offense, I can’t speak much on, as the Braves starter didn’t allow one hit the entire game, walked just two, had one wild pitch and one hit batter, and struck out sixteen.

Peoria Mariners 0, AZL Cubs 7 (+ 6)
Not much to say for this one. RHP Fray Martinez (6.61, L) had another rough outing, dropping his record to 0-5 as he went three innings and had six runs score against him on seven hits, a wild pitch, a hit batter, a walk, and three Ks. Following that, five different pitchers got in an inning of work. LHP Eddy Hernandez (2.57) recorded three flyouts, RHP Cheyne Hann (0.00) finally made his debut and struck out a pair, RHP Taylor Stanton (5.40) and RHP Chris Kirkland (1.80) did the same in their respective innings, though Stanton walked one, and RHP Yao-wen Chang (2.79) let a run score on a hit, a wild pitch, a hit batter, and a walk in the eighth.
2B Cesar Fuentes (CS, .322) and 3B Jharmidy de Jesus (.349) both had a single and a walk in the game. DH Scott Savastano (.333) also made his first appearance since the early part of June when he was with the Aquasox.

VSL Astros 0 (+ 2), Aguirre Mariners 4
RHP Jesse Nava (1.17, W) threw six innings, giving up two hits, a hit batter, and a walk while striking out six. RHP Rhonny Acosta (0.00) got in his first appearance of the year and pitched two frames, walking one. RHP Johalbi Chourio (4.35) walked two in the ninth.
1B Carlos Ramirez (2B, 2 R, .312) had three hits in the game and RF Rigoberto Rangel (2 RBI, .292), 3B, Jetsy Extrano (2B, R, RBI, .286), and C Larry Gonzalez (RBI, .245) all had two hits.

DSL Cardinals 4 (- 12), Yamasa Mariners 6
RHP Bruno Mercedes (2.18, E) had one of those startlingly good starts that occasionally pop up in the summer leagues, going five innings and allowing two runs to score on three hits, a wild pitch, a hit batter, a walk, and ten Ks. His command seems to fluctuate a little, but I think he’s earning himself a ticket to the states next year. RHP Enrique Rosario (3.42, BS) got through the next inning, but allowed two runs to score on two hits, a wild pitch, and two Ks. RHP Jose Perdomo (4.23, W) allowed a hit and a walk through the next inning and a third and then RHP Nelson Germocen (1.32, S) allowed a hit and struck out three, taking it the rest of the way.
2B Ameilis Carvajal (2B, 2 R, 2 RBI, SB, E, .260) reached four times via three hits and a walk. From the rest of the group, DH Mario Flores (RBI, .320) had a single and two walks, 3B Ramon Morla (R, CS, .208) had two singles, and CF Marbin Beltre (2B, 3 R, SB, .279) had a double.

Looks like Peoria is having a hard time with starting pitching. Do you think they will give some of these younger guys a start and throw more?

Jfrom, I re-read your initial writeup (June 17) for Pulaski and you mentioned the Mariner’s first ‘and possibly only’ season in Pulaski. I didn’t catch it at the time. Is there a problem with Pulaski? I like the extra team and think it gives our prospects another team to get experience with. I would be very surprised to see Pulaski dropped after only one year. It seems to me that we also have a lot of talent on our DSL and VSL teams, with Pulaski seeming like a logical step up for promotion?

Pulaski’s sort of a test case and it was only a one year agreement they signed (affiliations usually only switch in even numbered years). It’s not that there’s a problem with it so much as I speculated that with possible changes in the front office, they may be less likely to adhere to the plan.

Peoria will get the younger guys starting eventually, but they usually ease them in slowly.
