Top 10 Prospects: Boston Red Sox

One by one I plan on taking a look at all 30 Major League Baseball teams and ranking their top ten prospects in order. As always let me know if you agree or disagree with any of my rankings.

1.) Jacoby Ellsbury, OF
Ellsbury has excellent speed and demonstrates that with his great base running ability as well as his superb glove in center field. Looks to be a great candidate to hit leadoff for the Sox with very good gap power. Constantly compared to a young Johnny Damon only with a better swing.

2.) Clay Buchholz, RHP
Has all the tools to be an ace pitcher for the Sox. Very good at handling pressure and has the makeup to be a big game pitcher which is exactly what a team like Boston needs. He has a 96 mph fastball and two outstanding breaking pitches. Needs to improve his consistency a little but that should be fixed with some more minor league seasoning.

3.) Michael Bowden, RHP
Very far along in progressing towards the majors. Generates excellent movement and command for his four pitches that are already major league ready. Despite a nice quick arm action, he still needs to work on his delivery a little. This should make these pitches even more effective. Has the skills to be very good in the near future.

4.) Craig Hansen, RHP

Hansen is a very intense competitor and has all the make up to be the Red Sox future closer and may get that chance this season. He has a very strong fastball (94-96 mph) and an excellent slider (87-89 mph) which he consistently throws for strikes.

5.) Daniel Bard, RHP
He will play his first year of pro ball this season and already posses one of the most electric arms in the minors with a 98 mph fastball and a scary slider. Will need to work on his command which can be sketchy at times.

6.) Dustin Pedroia, SS
Pedroia isn’t going to hit the ball out of the park a whole lot, but what he will give you is excellent contact and the very valuable ability to get on base. A scrappy player who is solid out in the field. Looks to be the Sox opening day second baseman.

7.) Lars Anderson, 1B
Left hander who can generate incredible power. Anderson also has an excellent eye at the plate and doesn’t chase pitches. The Sox are excited how his skills translate to the pro game for the first time this season.

8.) Justin Masterson, RHP
Masterson was a very successful college closer and will be converted to a starter in 2007, but may still end up as a reliever. Two and four seam fastballs with good movement, solid slider (85-87 mph) and four-seam circle changeup (80-84 mph) with a very good drop.

9.) Jason Place, OF
Place is a five tool outfielder who crushed the ball in his debut with his short stroke and raw power. His bat speed should allow him to maintain his offensive output but does need to work on his strike out totals. Also has a very strong arm in the outfield.

10.) Kris Johnson, LHP

Johnson has a very smooth delivery and ok command. Throws three above average pitches with a fastball (90-94 mph), wicked curve, and change up.

Solid ratings. Any reason Bryce Cox and George Kottaras don’t make the list?

Thanks Evan! It was really tough for me to leave Cox off because I think he’s going to rise through the Sox system pretty quickly. I loved watching him in the College World Series last year and really wanted him on this list however I had to decide on whether or not to include Hansen due to his major league experience and since he’s technically still a rookie I had to leave him on here. Otherwise Cox would have been on the list especially since I think he’s overcome the little hic-up he had with his control.

[…] Minor Details yesterday released his ranking of the Top 10 Prospects of the Red Sox. There are two surprises to me here: that reliever Bryce Cox is not on the list, and catcher George Kottaras. He counts Craig Hansen as a prospect, which bumps Cox off. However, he’s so high on 1B Lars Anderson that Anderson is ranked 7th and is likely the reason Kottaras is not on the list. […]

Its hard for me to see Hansen amounting to a whole lot now. I know he dominated in college, but with the exception of about 6 minor league innings he’s be absolutely terrible since signing with Boston. I wish him all the best, but after what he’s done in the majors so far I have to disagree with him being ranked so high.

Small quibble. Other than that, great list.

Good list, I think Masterson has as much of a chance as Cox at being in the Sox pen by end-of-year. His control is excellent and he gets a lot of ground balls. While Cox’s control has improved you got to wonder if he will maintain his improvement if he is rushed through the system and is suddenly pitching in front of 35,000 fans.

I’m also very high on Brandon Moss, I think he is going to continue to get better and that we have yet to see his best. Very powerful stroke, saw a bunch of Sea Dogs games last year and he seems like he could break out and be a 25-30 homerun guy with some minor adjustments.
