Grapefruit Update
Back from a few days away, and catching up on the news from Bradenton:
Josh Shortslef, who was removed from the major league camp roster due to shoulder issues, had an MRI of the shoulder last week. The MRI showed some rotator cuff inflammation, and he is getting treatments for that. He’ll be re-examined later this week, and then may or may not be allowed to resume pitching.
The Pirates signed RHP Byung-Hyun Kim, as they continue to add possibilities for bullpen staffing. Kim was added to the 40-man roster, but the Pirates are clearly stating that he is going to have to earn a position on the team. If he doesn’t make the team…. will he report to Indy? will he be free to shop himself to other teams?
Infielder Ray Olmedo, recently claimed off waivers by the Pirates, was removed from the 40-man roster to make room for Kim. Olmedo must clear waivers, and then the Pirates want to outright him to Indianapolis, though have him stay in the Pirates’ major league camp. Olmedo also has the option of declining the assignment to Indidanapolis and declaring himself a free agent, and looking for a better position elsewhere.
Minor League camp opens on Friday, with pitchers and catchers reporting. Position players report by Wednesday of next week. All players in minor league camp stay in the dorms at Pirate City, which have just been renovated.
