Greensboro Grasshoppers 6, Hickory Crawdads 1
boxscore

The Grasshoppers pitchers held the Crawdads to 3 hits as Hickory suffered only the second loss of the season. The Crawdads went down in order in the first three innings. They did get three baserunners in the 4th inning, when 1B Miles Durham doubled and LF Erik Huber reached base on a fielding error. Both were left stranded at the end of the inning, though. 2B Matt Cavagnaro singled in the 5th inning, but he was also left on base, as was RF Austin McClune after his double in the 6th inning.

The Crawdads did score one run, and they did it without any hits in the 8th inning. SS Jose De Los Santos walked, and Durham reached safely on a throwing error that put De Los Santos on third base and Durham on second. Huber walked to load the bases. A wild pitch allowed De Los Santos to scramble home from third base.

Greensboro scored 4 runs in the 2nd inning when starter Matt Foust got wild. He hit a batter, walked one, threw a wild pitch, and gave up three singles and a double. Those four hits and four runs were all he gave up in 4 innings, and he also walked 5 batters. Ronald Uviedo pitched 2 scoreless innings, allowing one hit and one walk. Moises Robles gave up a homer in the 7th and another run on two hits in the 8th to give the Grasshoppers their last two runs.

boxscore

3B Eddie Prasch went 3-for-4 with a double, and C Steve Lerud hit his first homer of the season to lead the Hillcats over the Warthogs. The Hillcats had two 3-run innings in the win.

The first four batters in the top of the 2nd inning reached base safely for Lynchburg. 1B Kent Sakamoto singled, Lerud and LF Jared Keel both walked, and CF Alex Presley singled to drive in Sakamoto. A wild pitch brought Lerud home, and Prasch’s first single of the game scored Keel. Steve Lerud added another run with his solo homer in the 4th inning.

The Warthogs scored 3 runs of their own in the 1st inning, on three singles, two fielding errors, and a ground out. Two more singles brought in another run in the 2nd inning. In the 4th inning, another single and the Hillcats’ third error of the game gave the Warthogs another run.

The Warthogs were ahead 5-4 going into the 9th inning. After two strikeouts, Jared Keel walked, and James Barksdale came in to pinch run. Alex Presley also walked, and Jim Negrych popped a pinch-hit single into right field to score Barksdale and move Presley to third base. Negrych stole second base, and when the Warthogs’ catcher made a wild throw to second base, Presley scored the second run of the inning. Then Eddie Prasch had his second RBI of the game with a double that scored Negrych. Reliever Jeff Sues, who had come in to pitch a perfect 8th inning, gave up one run in the bottom of the 9th, but then retired the next three batters to earn his first win of the season.

Starter Danny Moskos pitched 5 innings for the Hillcats. He gave up 5 runs (2 earned) on 6 hits with one strikeout. Eric Krebs pitched 2 scoreless innings, allowing 2 hits and one walk while striking out one.
