Sox on Deck

Bryan Corey To Japan?

Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe mentioned today that Bryan Corey is contemplating heading to Japan if he does not make the Major League squad. The article also mentioned that the O’s have been scouting him, presumably for their Major League Team. This would not be the first time for Corey in Japan. In 2004, Corey spent the season pitching for the Yomiuri Giants. Corey would be the second pitcher of the Sox to head to Japan, Travis Hughes being the first.

It is going to be very difficult for Corey to make the team. The problem is with all of the players without options.  I just can’t see a scenario where they would take Corey over Aardsma or Snyder. 2007 saw Corey post an impressive 3.69 ERA and 1.13 WHIP over 68.1 innings while at Pawtucket. PECOTA projected Corey to post a 4.70 ERA if the Sox give him a chance in Boston. He is a very good depth guy but he just does not have the stuff to be a regular. Don’t rule out a return to Pawtucket but I will keep you posted on where he ends up either way.
