Yankees Spring Training Update #3

The Yankees lost to the Astros by the score of 9-5 down in Tampa earlier today. Anydy Pettitte took the hill and struggled, giving up 2 earned runs on 3 hits in 2 2/3 innings. The big blow came of the bat of Victor Diaz, a two-run homerun just inside the right field foul pole. It happens. It’s only spring training. At least it’s better than the implosion that occured yesterday with CMW, as he only lasted 2/3 innings, giving up 6 runs. With all Andy’s gone through this off-season, it amazes me how he is able to still pitch effectively to some degree. He’ll get em next time. In terms of pitching prospects, there really wasn’t any pitching in the game: Bruney, Phillips, and Veras all are AAAA pitchers (maybe you could put Edwar in that group too). However, on the hitting side, the star was Brett Gardner, who raised his spring training batting average to .364 with a double and triple in today’s game. If anything, his stock has risen in the eyes of Joe Girardi. Look to see Gardner be called before JT or AJax if an injury occurs to either Damon, Melky, or Bobby, (unless JT or AJax are going absolutely beserk down in AA Trenton of course). Now here’s your prospect update:

Pitching:
Edwar Ramirez: 1/3 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K
Steven White: 1 1/3 IP, 2 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 1 K

Hitting:
Austin Jackson: 0-2
Alberto Gonzalez: 1-2
Colin Curtis: 0-1
PJ Pilittere: 0-2
Brett Gardner: 2-2, 2B, 3B

Tomorrow, the Yankees will face the Rays at Legends Field. This 1:15 pm game features veteran Mike Mussina against newcomer Matt Garza. Till then, have a good one everybody!

From what I saw I wouldn’t really say Pettitte struggled. That homerun Diaz hit was on a real good pitch, as Andy said after the game sometimes you just have to tip your cap.

Gardner should get a spot if we can trim it down to 11 pitchers or someone get hurt later in the season.

White has looked horrific both time out. he looks like he hasn’t throw a breaking pitch in his life

everything else looked pretty decent, I like how Cano and Melky are off to a good spring so far. if they can avoid their usual horrific start they’re going to look awfully good

There’s no way the Yankees go with 11 pitchers.

I didn’t think Pettitte struggled at all. Just had a little bad luck on one pitch.

Also, I agree that they will not go with 11 pitchers. There’s too many starters who don’t go deep into games.
