Confirmed International Signings List
This is a list of the players the Yankees have officially signed, as well as other information, as I come up with it. I will also link to scouting reports if I find them. I realize this kind of looks like crap now, but maybe when I have more time I will make it into an excel spreadsheet, or something like that, if I can figure out how to do that.
Name Position Country Bats/Throws Bonus
Anderson Félix SS DR $500,000
Giancarlo Arias SS DR L/R 1,000,000
Jackson Valera C/3B VZ
Yeico Calderón OF DR
Ramón Flores OF VZ

There is also some talk that the Yanks also got SS Giancarlo Arias as mentioned by BA a few days ago as well as OF/1st/DH Yeico Calderon.

Apparently the Yankees aren’t announcing any at or around midnight and will have a press conference to announce there signing rather than doing it through the night. Obviously some will leak out but like the A’s are doing with Inoa the Yankees will also do an afternoon announcement on there signings.

My bad I didn’t see below that you are hearing the same info.

Damnit, now we have to wait like a month to see if we get Yorman…

[…] Inoa, is already off the market), but luckily Eric at Pending Pinstripes will. He’s got a list of confirmed signings set up that he’ll update as the news trickles in, and also a general discussion thread. […]

Inoa is already 6′7, and very likely to get taller. We all know what difficulties 6′8+ pitchers have.

Pete Abe is reporting that the Yanks have in fact signed Arias and Calderon.

We signed another Venezuelan catcher??
That alone psychs me out. I wonder if this guy is more defensive-oriented than Montero was.. Could Valera be the plus power hitter of the bunch??

No Pitchers??? What happened to the lefty they were rumored to have the inside track on?

Erik,
How do you rate the class so far? Also, is this considered a small class for the Yanks or is 5 or 6 players a decent size class?
Thanks

Joe,
I really have very little basis for rating the class, given that I know only what I have read about the players. Based on the bonuses compared to some of the other numbers being thrown around, it doesn’t sound like they signed a top-tier big name guy like Montero and DeLeon were in their respective years.
However, it sounds like they got a lot of depth, and spread their bonuses around to a bunch of talented guys. Arias, Flores, and Calderón have all been ranked top-15 talents by Saberscouting (by no means the be all and end all), so getting 3 of the top 15 is pretty darn good. The Yankees, with their extensive scouting in the DR and Venezuela, are usually able to find lesser-known talents, and maybe Valera and Félix are examples of that. We won’t really know anything until they get to full-season ball, but I trust the Yankees to spend wisely and extensively in International Free Agency.
I imagine the Yankees will end up with more than these 5, but these are likely the 5 biggest dollar signings. I can’t see them not signing a single pitcher, and they will probably get some guys from some other countries in south/central America or elsewhere. Additionally, they might be in the race for Yorman Rodriguez, who isn’t old enough to sign until August. We’ll see, but I bet in the end this will be one of their strongest IFA classes. Carlos Rios and the Yankee organization certainly seem to believe that to be the case.

Where did the A’s suddenly get all of their money?
July 3rd, 2008 at 7:33 am
Every team has a surplus of money Bill. A good numbers of team are hesitant to using it on draft picks thanks to the idiotic slot bonuses. The International FA don’t have any salary guidlines, so if there is a player a team really likes, it won’t effect them to pony up a few million.
Plus with free agents costing as much as they do now, there is a premium being put on young talent. Thats why you are seeing these small market teams use their money wisely on a young player who is cost effective for 6 years, and why more teams are getting away from the slot recommendations. Its not worth it to lose out on a good college or HS player because Bud says so. Its just smart business to spend more money on guys with upside than Free Agents who are already on the downslope of their careers.

The A’s got the money from the Yankees.
Thank you luxury tax
July 3rd, 2008 at 9:15 am
Bo, actually that’s revenue sharing money that they get from the Yankees. Luxury tax goes to the league.

From an interview with Carlos Rios, it sounds like the Yankees are on to at least 2 more position players (an infielder and an outfielder). A commenter at Saberscouting also mentioned that the Yanks are interested in a lefty pitcher from Taiwan, last name Wang (no idea if there is any relation), who is looking for about 400,000.

What interview with Carlos Rios?
July 3rd, 2008 at 12:37 pm
On pinstripes plus, so only subscribers can access it. I’m not a subscriber, but I was able to find some info from that interview.

How nice does that sound? Premium center fielder. As a consolation prize, I’d certainly take it.
