Rathman interviews for open running backs coach position
According to the Press Democrat, Tom Rathman has interviewed for the open running backs coach position.
There had been speculation that Rathman would have been a candidate for the offensive coordinator position, but his inexperience in that field could have been a huge factor in the decision. However, Rathman as a running backs coach makes a lot of sense.
From 1997-2002, Rathman served as the running backs coach here in San Francisco with Steve Mariucci. I think he did a pretty good job in molding a great talent like Garrison Hearst in a premiere running back.
If Rathman does get the job, it would bring familiarity back to the team with a hint of that old school feeling. And wouldn't it be cool to have that Woody Harrelson look-alike on the sideline?
We'll see how this develops. But if Rathman does become the offensive coordinator, that leaves Scott Linehan as the only name that has surfaced that I think may be the best fit for offensive coordinator. There are a few former head coaches like Jim Fassel and Brian Billick, but I think it is best to stick with someone who has been in the league recently.
