Predicting The Astros Second Half
I wrote a guest entry for Sports Predictions on my opinion of the performance of the team in the first half and my predictions for the second half.
http://sportprojections.com/houston_astros.php
Yes, I sound all doom and gloom. I can’t see much of an improvement in the second half, and I don’t see any help in the minors, and I don’t see McLane making a good trade.
Fire away.
Also, here is Ben Lipson’s top 100 prospects list from Top Prospects.com.
http://www.topprospectalert.com/top100baseballprospects.htm
We can discuss all the Astros prospects who dominate that list.
Good to know we have such a good, strong farm. And speaking of farm, I would appreciate opinions from the Express fans about the pitching of McLemore, Gutierrez and Estrada.

Well, Lisa, I think you were lenient in your grading, esp. for Scrap Iron. I’d give him a D overall. But can’t blame the manager when the players don’t perform, although it doesn’t help that they were positioned poorly. My hope is management sees the reality and starts building for next year, rather than work for the impossible dream. Oswalt seems to think in recent comments that they can run at it, but what else would you expect him to say? If they’d all loosen up and focus on having fun playing and forget the push for yet another impossible finish, we might see some great ball from these guys.

The grades were about right.
Let’s talk trades. Mike Lamb should be traded while hot, and i think the Twins would be very interested in Lamb. The only spot he can play it’s DH, or 1st, but even first looks like too much for him.
Ensberg most be traded as well, again the Twins and maybe the Angels or Dodgers. If the LA teams don’t strike a deal for Cabrera they might take a chance with Ensberg. Loretta should also be traded, not sure who could use a 2nd baseman, but maybe the Yankees would use him at 1st or something. Really don’t know.
Jason Lane has no value. I wouldn’t trade Lidge, Qualls or Dan, but i think Lidge would be happy to get ride of that Crawford box..
If Purpura is going to trade Lidge might as well trade with the Dodgers or Angels. I think those are the only teams who can give something of value.. Is Andy LaRoche and a pitching prospect enough? I think Lidge is valuable and can bring a nice bounty..
Jennings won’t resign probably so trade him also. Woody contract is just stupid, 2 years for that. We lost Hirsh and Taylor for a rent. Purpura $%#%$ grr.
This are the only guys currently on the roster that i would like to see next year in Houston:
Berkman, Burke, Everett, Lee, Scott, Pence. Not sure in the C position. Quintero and Munson will be there probably

“Yes, I sound all doom and gloom”
It took me awhile to realize it, but that’s totally your schtick. Why? Because you do it well. Same reason my schtick is…whatever it is I do.
And besides, you gave Loretta an A, which means not everything is going badly.
I agree with Gary that you were a tad lenient on Garner. No big deal though.
All in all, a good contribution.

andrew, you should go back and read my stuff from a few years ago. i wasn’t doom n gloom then. well, maybe around june 1 05…
i started being all doom n gloom when we were playing during the WS and i realized that phil was not the type of guy who could learn from mistakes and he wouldn’t never know when to pull pitchers or PH.
and then i got doomier and gloomier when i realized that the farm was bout as empty as it is possible for a farm to get
and with the biggio thing overriding the entire seeason, well, i FINALLY decided to just shrug off the year
- yeh i WAS a tad lenient on garner. he’s not bad with a veteran team like the 04 team, but his obsession with trying to make every guy into a utility guy and his obsession with chinging the lineup more than a grrrl changes shoes is, well, a real problem

Interesting that the Yankees farm system was supposedly “run down” and now they have six prospects in the top 100.
Is that the result of good trades by their GM, or sucking up by the compiler of that list?
July 12th, 2007 at 8:51 pm
interesting indeed. I hope u have time to look into the schedules of our division rivals. Where we have a slight chance of gaining some ground.
July 12th, 2007 at 10:05 pm
thing is that george doesn’t have a problem giving a guy like chad jones a mill signing bonus because he doesn’t CARE if bud likes him or not
and yeh,
i’ll look into the schedules

Carlos Zambrano has 12 career home runs:
4 against us
4 against the Reds
4 against the rest of the league
weird. after the long layoff, plus a bright day game, plus him going against our sometimes clueless offense, it has the feel of a no-hitter possibility.
July 13th, 2007 at 1:08 pm
It also has the feel of a great day to have Zambrano on your fantasy team.
Three no-hit innings and five K’s so far. Ouch.
July 13th, 2007 at 3:01 pm
Well, certainly a fast start for our ‘Stros. 4 errors and 3 hits. Yikes.
July 13th, 2007 at 3:57 pm
They’re really not good at starting anything. Start of the first half, choke. Start of the second half…well, not “choke” so much as all-around blah.
Jennings was good for the first five innings, but putting in Qualls with men on is inexcusable. He doesn’t put out the fire, he throws gas on it with reckless abandon.

robert,
defense doesn’t matter. just hitting.
defense doesn’t matter. just hitting
