Lance Berkman Is NL Player Of The Week Again
We all know he’s great and he’s having a run for the ages. But now that he’s been named NL player of the week for the second time in 3 weeks, I guess that BBTN is probably going to have to mention his name again. Kevin youkilis of the Red Sox was named AL POTW, so I guess that means 4 minutes, 55 seconds for the important guy and 10 seconds for ol whatshisname.
From Justice’s latest column on Lance:
“He’s batting .382 after Sunday’s 8-5 Astros win at Dodger Stadium. That’s up 83 points in the last 16 games. He has hit .492 the past two-plus weeks (29 for 59) with a .557 OBP. He has reached base in 25 of his last 33 plate appearances.
Wait, it gets better. According to the Society for American Baseball Research (SABR):
• He’s the fourth player in 51 years to have 16 hits in a stretch of 20 at-bats.
• He’s the second player in 50 years to have a 19-for-25 stretch. Albert Pujols did it in 2003.
• Prior to his 1-for-4 on Sunday, he hadn’t made more than one out in any of his previous six games — all of which included at least four plate appearances. Going back to 1957, only three players have had a similar on-base stretch while making so few outs.”
I really wish that writers would stop talking about how the player is as a person, seing as how they don’t actually KNOW the guy. I sure wish that it really is true that Lance is actually a good person, not just a good baseball player, but I’d rather that the media didn’t build all these sand castles. Just praise the guy for his baseball skills and his interaction with teammates, fans, media. Then leave it be. It’s Tejadar than you would think to try to explain to your kids why you cheer the jersey but boo the person…

“Its Tejadar”…. nice.
Yeah sportswiters get man crushes on certain guys because how they act in the locker room, but in some ways it’s just as much a part of the game as hitting .369
Back in the day these guys were the biggest heroes in America… “Hero’s are remembered but Legends never die” It takes that special personality to transcend hero to legend.
I say take it for what its worth…

and you know, i’d rather the baseball players were turned into legends instead of heroes.
truth is that we remember what we want to remember and what we remember usually ain’t quiiiite the way it really happened anyhow. our memories are the stories we love - and stories shouldn’t have to be scientific fact
we all sinners, some worse than others. and it is foolish to build up one person as if we have finally found the one sinless guy. because we haven’t. he’s just a guy, not a saint, not a hero. he’s a guy who hits/throws/catches balls really really well and the rest - well, it’s The Rest Of The Story…

Thats very true, but like you said its different for the kids… My folks would have never allowed me to be a Bonds fan, guys like Jackie Robinson and Nolan Ryan were mandatory “Saints” in my childhood and I am better off for having them as role models not Darryl Strawberry etc.

travis,
but we really do NOT have any idea what any of these guys are actually like in their personal lives.
we don’t because all we see a a small fraction of them.
- amusement
would be interesting to see what would have happened to some of the “characters” and “saints” if they had to play with today’s media staring at them
and wasn’t darryl strawberry a GREAT role model for poor kids when he started out? and wasn’t kirby puckett a WONDERFUL role model his whole career?
- so i STILL will tell my kids - admire his ability to play baseball. but remember he’s just a guy and you got exactly ZERO idea what kind of guy he really is

yeah, like say, Charlie Hustle. Everyone loved him. Until…
May 12th, 2008 at 6:09 pm
Well, okay, they didn’t LOVE him, but they sure thought he was a great baseball role model of performance and grit.
May 12th, 2008 at 6:11 pm
Yeah, Yeah, okay, so Indians fans probably didn’t like him and I’m sure Ray Fosse didn’t send him Chirstmas cards, but you get the idea…

On a different note, here’s hoping that [whatever phone company] Park is just what Roy needs, ’cause this is where home runs go to die and Roy sure needs a start where he doesn’t give up home runs!

steve,
would be interesting to hear what other ballplayers had to say about ol pete. too bad about the code of silence…
and i would LOVE to see roy quit giving up gopher balls

well, too bad, because he gave up another one tonight. Of course, then no one got on base after that.
Geez, how in the WORLD is that bunt to Wigginton not an ERROR! It was bunted so hard it got to him on one bounce — all he had to do was catch it in his glove and throw to first. That’s totally an error. Worse, that run comes around to score.
And you KNOW that Bourn catches that fly ball that Cruz totally screwed up and let fall in front of him and bounce by to allow another run to score. Man, that awful defense has got to get in Roy’s head.
It a good thing his buddy Lance bailed him out — I was watching Roy and he came back out in the 6th-7-th-8th throwing harder and hardest, and then dumping a 67 mph curve after 95 mph fastballs. oh man — untouchable. it was good to see.
and your baby doll Brad had three awesome at bats — worked the count, made ‘em throw a lot of pitches, and scorched all three balls. nice.
when I saw the line and saw Loretta, Cruz and Ausmus all in at the same time, I thought we’d given up and there was no way we’d score runs tonight. But they came through, and Hunter had EXCELLENT at bats, also.
Another fun game!

1 - of COURSE it was an error. hometown scorer crap
2 - and of COURSE bourn catches that ball that cruz didn’t. but, you know, who cares about runs allowed? batting average is all that matters
3 - and roy DID get better as the game went on
4 - and oh, my baby doll brad was just sooooooooo good. that boy is just WONderful.
5 - and i thought the same thing
i just can’t believe they keep winning. if this team ends up winning, lance is NO QUESTION the mvp.
