Brad Ausmus Hits #1500

This is Brad’s 17th season as a ML catcher. And, except for this year and his rookie year, he has been the main catcher. Darn few catchers play 15 years as the main catcher, and Brad has now caught 1847 games.

I know quite well that Brad is no Piazza with the bat. But in spite of his career OPS of .671 (75 OPS+) and pitchers, whether HOF or middle relief scrubs, love pitching to him.

And I sincerely hope that after his career ends this season, he will take up modeling, as Jim Palmer did. Boxer-briefs, please…

I realize that Brad’s hits are more a result of his longevity as opposed to his hitting prowess, but do you realize that only 554 baseball players in the history of all of baseball have more hits than Brad? That’s kind of amazing, really.

At 1501 hits, he’s currently tied with Tim McCarver and just passed Manny Sanguillen (1500), two other noteworthy catchers. Brad will probably get a couple of dozen more hits this year and be around #530 or so by the end of the season.

He’s having a pretty good season for him — aside from 2005 when he hit about like he’s hitting now, he hasn’t hit this well since 2000. His OBP is around .325, which isn’t too shabby for a #8 hitter. And he had excellent at bats yesterday: 21 pitches in four at bats, including a 10(!) pitch rifle shot single to left, an on-the-screws topspin line shot to left that the LF made a diving catch, a line drive single to right to keep a rally going, and he was working the pitcher over into a hitters count with the bases loaded when the pitcher threw the ball away to score two runs and seal the game. nice.

You’re absolutely right, Brad is an awesome catcher & a great asset to the team. Him mentoring Towles is a great thing & hopefully Brad can turn Towles into what he usually can do. Defensive wise that is
