Wigginton FINALLY Hits With Men On Base But Kent Beats Astros
4 hours - 11 innings, and man oh man did this game draggggg.
I was gonna call this - Quintero Gets The Astros Biggest Hit - but I’m too depressed to be funny. The poor guy took a backswing from Luis Maza right in the helmet on top of his head and it bout knocked him cold. In fact, I thought it HAD knocked him completely out - they are calling it a “mild concussion” - but I don’t THINK so.
sigh
Wandy didn’t have such a good night his own self - he got hit big time too. Of course, the HP ump squeezed the heck out of him and wouldn’t call any FB below mid-thigh a strike and his curve wasn’t working at all. So all in all I guess he’s lucky he only gave up 6 hits and 4 walks and 5 ER in 6 IP.
Villareal, naturally, gave up a run, although not a homer. Byrdak pitched a scoreless inning with a walk, Geary pitched 2 scoreless, Wesley Wright pitched 1.1 innings, then coughed up the game loser to Jeff Kent.
All the hitters except Ausmus had a hit - well, Lance didn’t either, but he walked twice and scored 2 runs. Unfortunately, both Loretta and Miggy left 5 guys on base and the Astros are like ofer Saito.
I’m sure that a lot of people will complain about Coop not using Brocail in a tie game, but the guy pitched 1.2 last night and has been overused and he needed some rest.
And speaking of needing some rest, I’m out too.

Kent should still be an Astro. Having him come out and pound the Astros like he does most of the time is really more evidence that Astros management has been without a clue for quite a while. I think the decision by McLane to keep Biggio when Kent was clearly the better player was a major factor in Hunsicker deciding hit was time to move on.
I still like Kent.

forget Kent, he is a clubhouse cancer and too old… he hit that HR in the same spot he hit it the playoffs, he just hits well at the Juice box, his overall numbers are in decline across the board.
How about Geary, he looked SOLID. He was an artist up there painting the corners. Why doesnt he relieve more often??

mark,
it was MORE than obvious that biggio could not play the OF. i mean he made clank lee look like barry lamar at his peak. he couldn’t move kent to first, and we had the good mo ensberg at 3rd.
so it was a choice between 2 players - and no question, in 2005, kent was an incredibly better second baseman.
so mclane had to make a decision. and in my opinion, he made a decision based on 2 things
1 - he desperately wanted to have an astro in the HOF and he was worried, with good reason, that bagwell might not make it. or that biggio wouldn’t make it to 3000 hits with any other team/teams and that the BBWAA wouldn’t elect biggio unless he passed the 3000 hits mark
2 - biggio would be a much bigger $$$ with the fans
it wasn’t a decision made to win ballgames, there is NO question. and between that and the beltran thingy, that was the end of the line for hunsicker
also, i seriously wonder if they had words about paying money for minor leaguers or the scouting director, etc
charles,
ah LUUUUUVVVVVV me some wandy even when he has a bad day.
- and no question he had a BAD day

i don’t think kent being a sour sullen person in the clubhouse really had anything to do with mclane picking biggio over him. it wasn’t about kent vs a young player or kent getting off on harrassing young players.
but the fact is that for 05, the year of the option, kent was a FAR better baseball player than biggio.
as for geary,
he has done a good job almost every time - except for the other day when he came in and hadn’t pitched in a week and was too rusty
i woudn’t be surprised if he gets more work
and villareal should not be put in tie games or basically any game except to mopup
NEVER trade with the braves for one of their pitchers.
