Jays Beat A’s In Walkoff Fashion
The Jays staged another walk off win tonight, this time off Huston Street and the Oakland A’s. After an Alex Rios single, and doubles by both “Hot” Rod Barajas and Kevin Mench, the Jays climbed their way to a 4-3 victory.
The Blue Birds now sit one game above .500 and after standing pat at the trade deadline, they seem destined to be mired in mediocrity until October. Games like the one tonight, however, along with the news that Vernon Wells could be back next week both make Jays fans feel like this team might be worth watching.
With AJ Burnett and Roy Halladay pitching like they could become a pair of 20 game winners with a little offense, it is becoming more and more possible that the Jays will entice AJ enough with a bonus to stay and throw all their eggs into the ‘09 basket.
A team of role players having subpar seasons will not get the job done in ‘08, but if that same group becomes the supporting cast behind a guy like Manny Ramirez? Well, that is a team I can get behind.
While JP Ricciardi still claims that the Jays are looking to see the postseason this year, his decision to remain idle at the trade deadline, coupled with the increased starts for David Purcey, John Parrish and Scott Richmond mean that this team is, in all likelihood, looking ahead to next spring.
In JP’s eyes, this team can limp to the finish line while Jesse Litsch works out his kinks in AAA as long as they come back next season guns blazing. That’s a great plan, as long as this team is not the one I see rolled out onto the field come next April.
The Jays will look to take the series against the hapless A’s in tomorrow night’s 3rd game of the 4 game set.
