T-Minus 2 Days! Just Some Rumormongering…

Following the Yates trade, David O’Brien reports that Frank Wren thinks we “need to make one more move,” and O’Brien thinks it’ll happen before Saturday night. Many people seem to think it’ll be a bench bat, as O’Brien says he expects either Brayan Pena or Scott Thorman will be dealt. Pena has more value, since he’s a catcher. (Apparently, the Giants need a backup backstop.)

Marcus Thames is a name a few people have tossed around, and I wouldn’t mind him, as long as he didn’t cost more than Craig Wilson last year. As I posted yesterday, Thames is your basic all-power, no-walk, no-batting average guy, sort of like Ruben Sierra. The last two years, he’s hit 44 homers with 114 RBIs in 617 at-bats, with 50 walks, 164 strikeouts, with a combined line of .250/.310/.527. (It’s worth mentioning, by way of comparison, that Jeff Francoeur’s combined line the past 2 years is 48 homers and 208 RBIs in 1293 at-bats, with 65 walks and 261 strikeouts and a combined line of .276/.315/.446.)

Because the Cubs are dumb and don’t know how to protect young, cheap, good assets, Matt Murton is also available. He’s a very good fourth outfielder — a much better hitter than either Anderson or Blanco, and seems to be a decent enough defensive corner outfielder — but he probably will cost an actual, live prospect. Both Thames and Murton are likely to engender a fair amount of interest from other teams. Murton’s better; let’s hope the Cubs don’t know that.

This stuff has been out for a few days, and I don’t really have any new news to report, but want to open the floor to you guys. Who do you want? What have you been hearing? Who in our farm system would you be willing to give up for them?

I would rather have Murton, and I am willing to bet many others would agree, but probably not at the price the Cubs should be asking for him. That said, they don’t seem to be willing to acknowlege his accomplishments, thus they are probably not going to be looking for as much as they should be.

Thames does intrigue me, but I think that Thorman could basically be the same thing for even cheaper. Why trade for what you already have?

I would LIKE MARCUS THAMES on OUR TEAM,but I’M HAPPY with SCOTT THORMAN on OUR TEAM,BOTH of THEM are TOTALLY ACCEPTABLE to ME.

As I said yesterday, I think Thames is probably the best-case scenario for Scott Thorman. Right now, there’s no guarantee that Thorman will ever make enough contact with the ball to be able to be a worthwhile bench bat. Thames hits .250 — Thorman struggles to hit .200.

I think Joey Gathright would fit really well…

I hear Ryan Freel might be out there.

Freel’s a nice player, but I think he’s overrated because of the steals. Also, he has a tendency of running into walls.

I hope the Braves trade Thorman just so that we don’t have to suffer through them trying him out at first next year after Teixeira leaves to the Yankees.

I don’t think the Braves will do it, but I would trade a prospect for Murton. They need a legit bat off the bench, which they rarely have. Thorman’s not going to do it.

any chance that murton can play center defensively? At least offensively, he’s less of an unknown quantity than Kotsay.

Zach, we already have a Gathright, his name is Josh Anderson. Gathright got lucky this past year but pretty much, he is the same player as Anderson would probably a bit more speed.

I’m hearing that the Braves may have claimed Ruben Gotay. That would be an interesting move. He certainly has some offensive potential and a BEAUTIFUL swing but his defense is pretty bad. Not sure where he’d fit in and also can’t confirm this yet.

I would love to have Ruben Gotay

    He’s not really a power bat…but he does put up a nice OBP/AVG. I wouldn’t complain.

He is better than Pete Orr.

The Braves did get Gotay. Apparently Lillibridge is heading to AAA. When Infante is healthy, a decision will have to be made between Prado and Gotay. Also, according to some Cub people, Murton had a very thick lower body and does not have much speed or quickness but he can hit. He is strictly a LFer with a mediocre arm assuming they kinow what they are talking about.

I remember seeing Murton play right a few times last season and it was not a pretty sight. I think he’s a left-fielder and that’s that, as Larry said.

I certainly wouldn’t “love” to have Gotay, but maybe we can move him somewhere. I’m surprised the Mets weren’t able to trade him. The thing is, he hit way over his head last year — basically, he hit better in the majors than he hit in the minors. He’s not that good.

I don’t know much about Gotay except what I’ve read here. But Infante has a lot to offer and from what I hear can play 1B as well as every other pos.

I’m ready to see Thorman go. I don’t hate him but he was a let down. I would rather keep Pena but the backup catcher spot doesn’t have to be that strong. We really just need someone as a backstop.

    Any more thoughts on Gotay?

I don’t understand how this is going to work. I guess if Yunel goes down during a game then KJ could move over to short and one of the other two could play second but it is a little dangerous to not have a backup shortstop. Even when Infante comes back, it is still a little iffy. I like Gotay. You should go watch some of his highlights and see his swing. Should be a fine pinch hitter.
