Francoeur Sent to AA Mississippi
As frustrated as I’ve been by his performance, I also feel for the guy. There’s no doubt in my mind that he’s trying everything he can to emerge from his slump. I heard that he spent his day off on Monday with his high school coach working on his hitting. I also heard that he’s been hitting the cages after the games this week. I’m not sure what else you can expect the guy to do.
That being said, I think this is a mental issue. I recently heard someone say that the game is 90% mental and the other 10% is all in your head. Perhaps some time in Mississippi will help Francoeur clear his head and get his swing back.
So, here’s to wishing Frenchy the best of luck and a swift return to Atlanta!

I also want to say how impressed I was with the cheers Francouer got each and every time he stepped to the plate last night. I heard a boo here and there as he went back into the dugout after being retired each time, but mostly I heard people showing him support. That’s why I love Atlanta fans. In New York or Boston he’d have been boo’d out of the stadium by now.

This is a crucial move for the Braves to make. He was promoted before he was ready, and he has always lacked certain skills — plate recognition, baserunning savvy, good routes to the ball in the outfield — that more minor league time could have helped him work on. Hopefully it’s not too late. We don’t know how much of his hitting woes are caused by his eye condition, and how much of that can be addressed by a new contact lens. And we don’t know how ingrained some of those bad habits have become after the equivalent of three full seasons in the major leagues. But we have to hope that he can relearn some of the basic aspects of the game — hitting, running, fielding — because this year he has literally done nothing well.

This poor guy had the misfortune of playing the best baseball he has or ever will play during his rookie half-season. People will always view that has his potential, when in fact, he was playing miles above his head and that’s obvious from his minor league track record. He’s got the tools, but he’s never learned to use them and a lot of guys that have them never do. I wish him all the best, but I won’t be holding my breath. This was absolutely the right move to make at this time and I applaud management for making it.
Quick question: does this, as I have hoped/predicted since he was drafted, push Jason Heyward to the top of our depth chart in RF? I’d love to put to rest those foolish notions that he’d waste some of his tools/skills by moving to 1B because his best position was already filled at the ML level.
P.S.: Kristi, I agree that the Braves fans that go to the games are good, but they aren’t enough. Atlanta broke my heart during that playoff series against the Cubs a few years back when the Ted looked like Wrigley South and they even performed a mass mock tomahawk chop.

Frenchy is not happy about this demotion. He said he “doesn’t agree with it” and “this has put a damper on my relationship with the Braves.” What did he expect?

He wanted to be given more warning, which I appreciate, but he has to know he played his way out of a starting job.

I’m really disappointed with the way Francouer is handling this in the press. He’s saying he had no idea this was coming and that there’s a damper on his relationship with the Braves now. Speculation of him being sent to the minors has been swirling for at least a week now. If he didn’t know it was a possibility, he was the only one. I think the Braves gave him even more time to turn things around than they would have for most players.
It just leaves a bad taste in my mouth that he’s out in the media making these sort of comments. I know it’s a huge blow to the ego, but he got himself in this mess and now he’s got to get himself out.

Atlanta fans are dismal. There are plenty of places that show more support, rain or shine, than the Braves. As far as my expierience goes, I would rank the Padres fan support below Atlanta.
I suppose we can blame it on the traffic congestion.

Regarding Frenchy, I am not so excited about “a swift return”, because I wonder if his problem is something that is based on a more enduring pattern of behavior, than something that a swift return implies. a few weeks? a month or two? No, I think that if we want the best for Frenchy we want him to at least stay down for the reminder of this year, with a cup of coffee in Sept at the end of the minor league season, for encouragement sake. Then a Spring Training evaluation. He needs the message, I think, that this is a serious issue.

I completely disagree about Frenchy needing to stay down all year. He just needs to clear his head and get his swing back.
I also disagree that his best season was his first half-season and that he’ll never do more than that. From 2006 to 2007, he showed marked improvement. Here’s a sample:
2006
.260/.293/.449
24 doubles
23 walks
2007
.293/.338/.444
40 doubles
42 walks
He did homer less, but he definitely showed a little more plate discipline. He wasn’t where we all want him to be, but he’s young and was making improvement. He’ll come back and be a solid right fielder for us or someone else down the road.
So far he’s looking good at Mississippi, going 2 for 4 last night with a walk. Tonight he has a hit and an RBI in his first at-bat.
