Ryan Braun signs 8-year, $45 million dollar extension

The Milwaukee Brewers have signed Ryan Braun to an 8-year, $45 million dollar extension Thursday morning. It’s the largest deal in team history in terms of both length and monetarily.

Braun is the reigning NL Rookie of the Year and has continued to play well this season after moving to left field from third base.

He batted .324 with 34 home runs and 97 RBI in only 113 games last season. He has a slugging percentage of .634, the highest mark for a rookie in major league history.

This season Braun is batting .287 with 9 home runs and 29 RBI.

This is a GREAT signing for the Brewers not only for their future but to show fans that ownership is serious about winning.

I can’t tell you how happy I am to be a Brewers fan on a day like today. This franchise spent years of suffering through management that didn’t care and gave money to people that didn’t deserve it. Ryan Braun is now the face of the Milwaukee Brewers at least through the 2015 season.

Sights now turn to Prince Fielder to see if he decides to get on board long-term with the Brewers. Make no mistake about it though, signing Ryan Braun was the top priority. Prince Fielder can be replaced much easier than someone like Ryan Braun could.

Happy Ryan Braun Extension Day, everyone!

The day Brett Favre retired, I wrote that Ben Sheets was now the face of Wisconsin professional sports; at least three readers felt that Prince Fielder was. {Side note: during the home opener on 4/04, as well as the Sunday, 4/06 game, I counted the number of Fielder and Sheets jerseys I saw…it was neck-and-neck at first, but Fielder had built a lead of 6 after the first day; I stopped counting when Fielder had a lead of over 12}.

This clearly sends a message to Fielder, et. al., that the club is willing to commit to its top talent. Fans that have Sheets jerseys are now going to be trading them for Braun jerseys (as Sheets’ jerseys will probably be obsolete next year), as will those that are still hanging onto their Jenkins, Turnbow, Cordero, and Maldonado jerseys (yes, I saw a Maldonado jersey, as well as a Neugebauer jersey last year).

Finally, to all those naysayers that kept telling us “The Brewers will trade all their young talent or lose them to free agency,” I say, “Pfft.” Braun has a limited no-trade clause in his contract.

Buster Olney of ESPN fame was interviewed on ESPN1070 Radio earlier today. Unfortunately, he predicted that Melvin would try to lock up Fielder after the end of this season, that Boras would advise Fielder not to sign a long term deal, and that Melvin would likely be shopping around Fielder either this coming offseason or the next one, much like what the Rangers did with Texeira.

On a side note, I saw a guy at Target buying a Fielder jersey with “Brewers” on the front, with “28″ beneath it, and realized how easy it would be to iron off the “2″ to convert it to a Braun jersey….
