That’s a Winner

Piniero Out-Duels Pedro

3-0 Cardinals.  Who would have thought that, with the Mets fighting for a division championship, they’d get shut out by this Cardinals club?

For the second time in two days the Cardinals dealt a cruel blow to someone else’s playoff aspirations.  The loss put New York in a tie with Philadelphia for the NL East lead.  The Mets never got anything going off Piniero; NY 2B Castillo’s error in the first gave the Cardinals an extra hitter, and they cashed it in for an early 1-0 lead.

RBI by Pujols and Ludwick rounded out the scoring in the third.

I can’t help but feel some self-satisfaction at this result, especially after listening to all the ‘I don’t care if the Cardinals won the NLCS, the Mets are still the better team’  crap following last year’s playoffs.  The bottom line is, the Cardinals won that NLCS.  One game (Game 2) their ace got shelled and they managed to win anyway (thanks, So Taguchi).  In Game 7 the Mets were essentially no-hit for 7 innings by Jeff Suppan before Molina’s HR in the 9th decided it.

Today’s game was a must-win for New York, and they flubbed it.  After all the water under the bridge these past 2 seasons, I guess the Mets are better - so long as the chips aren’t down.

Who cares what others think, the Cardinals are still the team that has the ring. I would take Jimmy Rollins over Jose “Dancing Queen” Reyes ANYDAY! ESPN is just an east coast channel, they will just have to get over it Josh. Do you think Piniero will be back?! He would be a great #3, he reminds me of the soup man. Here’s to the Birds 08′ run!!

If LaRussa and Duncan return for 2008, Piniero would be foolish to seek employment elsewhere. Of course, I thought that of Jeff Weaver, and you saw what he did (and how that turned out).
