Cold Water on Mark Cuban Rumors

Baseball Think Factory is reporting that Deadspin is reporting that some celebrity rag called Radar Online is reporting that some annoymous source claims that Mark Cuban is set to pay $625 million for the Cubs.  Except instead of saying it that way, the headline at BTF is “Cuban Offers $625 million for Cubs.”

This is lesson number 3,927,471 in the need for critical reading of anything you see posted on the web. What starts as an anonymous rumor on a tabloid gets picked up by Deadspin which, by the time it gets mentioned at btf, no longer is mentioning the anonymous source from which this Whole Big Boatload of Nothing originated.

p.s. It’s too bad, I’d love to see it happen.

Even better news: Some guy on BCB called Cox Communications and they’re already selling the EI package for 2007. As you all know, MLB was hell-bent on starting the deal this season.

“Anyways, I hope this thing really does get squashed.”

Turns out cable companies gave in and agreed to carry the MLB Channel in 2009, which was the main reason why MLB was switching (or trying to, at least) to DirecTV.

    My TV Guide post-

Cheers- For the MLB package staying on cable, now cheap bastards like me get a week of free MLB games at the start of the season.

Jeers- To Trans for throwing a wet towel on the Cuban rumor. What’s next the Easter Bunny???

who’s saying the deal is dead, btw?

i haven’t seen anything about that.

I’m not saying it couldn’t happen.

Just that there’s been some very poor “reporting” of information over at one of the most heavily read baseball sites, BTF. There’s absolutely nothing credible behind the report that started the most recent rumors.

We still know what we knew before. That Cuban has made a generalized statement to the effect of “sure, I’m always looking to aquire valuable sports properties” when someone asked him about buying the cubs, awhile ago.”

    Wet blanketly,

    In the Trib, interesting though.

    Re: Trib denial

Not saying he is interested (be nice though)…

But if you’re Mark Cuban and you get an email from suchandsuch@chicagotribune.com, asking to confirm reports that you are “desperate” to buy the Cubs and “want so bad” to own them, do you think you would ‘fess up to it?

Dude didn’t get to be a billionaire by showing his cards.

im already sick of mark cuban talk.

let’s just toss out the whole thing about the cubs probably not being for sale and just assume it is…

who seriously thinks the other 29 owners wants this clown around…cuz they’d have to allow him in. he screwed up…but him screwing up is why some people like him.

Oh man oh man oh man I hope he’s interested and pulls it out. Mark Cuban owning the Cubs would be good news for the future.

Very good news about the EI package possibly staying on cable. Good to see Selig possibly change his tune and actually cater to the most loyal fans. I guess some of us fans complaining might of helped.

Just because this story isn’t true doesn’t mean Cuban is not interested. His denial in the Trib seemed to speak to the $625 million offer rumor.

He isn’t in any position to make such a bid for an entity that is not yet for sale (without buying the whole shebang).

    That’s what Wrigleyville thinks.

So the Tribune Company will continue to pwn the Cubs? And everyone else will continue to pwn the Cubs?

The rest of the MLB owners should jump at the chance to jettison another huge corporation for an individual owner–regardless of what they think of the individual. There’s nothing ridiculous, embarrassing or media-whoring that Mark Cuban could do that’s a fraction as damaging to the long term health of the league as having the commercial interests of a large corporation dictate the decisions of your MLB franchise. Corporations make lousy owners as short term profits and long term dynasties aren’t often synonymous.

  17. crunch says:

    February 28th, 2007 at 10:30 pm

it could be argued a diverse corp. who’s ass isnt riding on the team is a lot better than…oh….what’s going on in florida and minnesota. it goes both ways.

yeah, the trib took a while to catch on, but the team has been a top-5 spender for a while and given this offseason i doubt they’re not gonna be a top-5 spender any time soon.

when it comes to if 110-130m is enough to compete…hell, its better than 2/3rd of MLB will see for a long long time.

  18. crunch says:

    February 28th, 2007 at 10:34 pm

and seriously…given cuban’s track record i really doubt the other owners would even let this guy around them.

most of baseball’s self-made owners come from a very different background of a dot.com’r with a history of media whoring (though that’s scaled back a bit as he’s aged).

crunch:what’s going on in florida and minnesota.

You mean humming and chuckling to themselves as they maniacally polish their world series trophies? Both Florida and Minnesota have won two world series apiece in the alst 20 years. The Cubs have only won one world series in my lifetime and that was in MVP Baseball 2004. I don’t think the commissioner gives trophies for that. Corporations make terrible owners. Spending money is not the same thing as winning. Sure the players earning the big bucks feel like winners, but I for one would like a championship Cubs team even if they had a small budget. For me the focus is the winning the world series part. Big corporations are simply too focussed on the quick buck and the bottom line to make good baseball owners.

“You mean humming and chuckling to themselves as they maniacally polish their world series trophies?”

sure…but what does that have to do with owners?

investment in team is what im talking about. the chance of repeating your outcome independant of what your GM and scouting crew can do for you.

money is an automatic advantage…having the wrong people spending it isnt. money is a tool of the game that the owner(s) directly effect.

one of those FLA wins was straight up bought by a greedy owner trying to drive up his franchise value to sell it. the gutting of the team when he couldnt get his price was just sickning as hell.

just cuz big corporations are out to make a buck doesnt mean they micromanage all their minor holdings. the trib is probably a lot more concerned with a variety of other media outlets well before the cubs come on the radar.

as far as the cubs “spending to win”…hell, i see a 110-130m team out there. could it be 150-200? probably..but, IMO i like to watch games, not hired mercenaries strangling their way to an expensively cheap win.

It’s inaccurate to say that BTF was “reporting” anything. BTF doesn’t ‘report’ - it’s just a collection of interesting stories that are grabbed from other sources. It’s a collection of links, nothing more. Furthermore, those links are posted by (potentially) the entire BTF community; anyone can post a story to the BTF Newsblog. There is no BTF collective that does anything.

It would be more accurate to say that “a link to this Deadspin story was posted at BTF”.
