Jamie Moyer vs. Rich Hill

Lineups:

Roberson RF Soriano LF
Iguchi 2B Fontenot 2B
Rollins SS Lee 1B
Howard 1B DeRosa 3B
Rowand CF Murton RF
Burrell LF Cedeno SS
Ruiz C Jones CF
Nunez 3B Kendall C
Moyer P Hill P

Rich Hill back to the mound, the guy who gets 3.22 runs per game from his offense, worst in the NL among pitchers with at least 100 innings pitched. Rich also got lit up against the Phils on May 11th in Philly. On the other side of the mound, there’s Jamie Moyer, a soft-tossing lefty, aka Cubs kryptonite. I’ve got a bad feeling about this.

Fontenot batting second? Kendall? Cedeno?? This lineup sucks.

  2. Cincykid says:

    August 1st, 2007 at 4:45 pm

this lineup does suck, which means we’ll score at least 7… been that way lately anyway…

  3. john says:

    August 1st, 2007 at 4:52 pm

What, no other lefties we could squeeze into the lineup? Grandpa Lou must have flipped back through his old Psych 101 textbook and found the section on “reverse psychology”…

  4. Wes says:

    August 1st, 2007 at 4:54 pm

We may not get a hit after DeRosa… maybe Murton can squeeze one out. 1-22 9 K’s.

  5. BillyBucks says:

    August 1st, 2007 at 4:56 pm

Where is the other split-squad game being played?

  6. Rob G. says:

    August 1st, 2007 at 5:00 pm

Kendall’s really picked it up as a Cub

    2007 as an A: 226/261/281 542 OPS
    as a Cub: 226/314/258 572 OPS

    woo!

  7. BillyBucks says:

    August 1st, 2007 at 5:03 pm

I understand the need to rest A-Ram on occasion, and Theriot can’t play short every day in 90 degree heat –but, Jacque in CF?? Does he have good numbers against Moyer? If so, why he is hitting 7th behind Cedeno? If not, why isn’t Pagan playing CF?

    This is really wacky.

  8. Larry Biittner says:

    August 1st, 2007 at 5:03 pm

FWIW, Moyer’s been more effective against righties in his career–not too shocking given that he’s not a hard thrower.

If I remember correctly, Bobby Bonilla really struggled hitting righty against John Tudor. One game he decided to hit lefty against him and hit a home run.

  9. The Real Neal says:

    August 1st, 2007 at 5:03 pm

Murton and Cedeno in the same lineup. I am amazed that the tidal waves and earthquakes from the world ceasing to rotate haven’t destroyed us all already.

  10. Larry Biittner says:

    August 1st, 2007 at 5:06 pm

But I still don’t think Jacque Jones should ever start against any LHS.

  11. Rob G. says:

    August 1st, 2007 at 5:08 pm

    from the last thread…

Jones actually 300/391/350 vs Moyer in his career, 20 AB’s and Moyer has no discernible split vs lefties or righties.

  12. Andrew says:

    August 1st, 2007 at 5:11 pm

    300/391/350

    ?

Looks like Jacque’s hit a lot of squibblers against Moyer.

  13. Rob G. says:

    August 1st, 2007 at 5:16 pm

    he’s got 6 hits, one a double.

    Kendall 320/346/320 with no XBH’s fwiw…

Soriano 195/209/512 in 41 AB’s 4 of his 8 hits off Soriano went yard, another was a double

    Murton 2/6 with a homer
    Derosa 2/8
    Ramirez was 0/5

  14. Rob G. says:

    August 1st, 2007 at 5:18 pm

    JJ since the break

280/362/340 7 BB, 5 K’s, 9 RBI’s (tied for 3rd on the team with Soriano behind Lee and Ramirez)

  15. Wes says:

    August 1st, 2007 at 5:39 pm

    195/209/512

    That’s an awesome split.

  16. Rob G. says:

    August 1st, 2007 at 5:41 pm

yeah, 4 of his 8 hits off Moyer it should read of course…

Ooh, Lou calls out Murton on the pre-game with Santo.

  18. dave says:

Ooh, Lou calls out Murton on the pre-game with Santo.

Can you give some more info? Like what he actually said?

  19. Andrew says:

    August 1st, 2007 at 5:50 pm

He was going through the lineup player by player and then he said something like:

Lou: “And then we got Murton …. (pause) …. And you know, we really need Murton to start hitting. You know, he’s been here and he knows this place and … it’s time.”

    Ronny: “Yeah.”

That was it, but it was pretty clear Lou wasn’t pleased with Murton’s lack of hitting at the big league level.

  20. Wes says:

    August 1st, 2007 at 5:55 pm

Is anybody pleased with his hitting at the big league level this season?

  21. Chad says:

I heard Lou called out Murton by saying that Matt’s baseball pants made his ass look big.

    2. RBI from Hill, Murton, and Cedeno so far. Are you sure we are not playing the Albuquerque Isotopes?

are sure that we aren’t the Isotopes?

  28. Rob G. says:

JJ hit a blooper down the left field line, rolled into the bullpen, Rollins picked it up.

  29. Rich C&T says:

What an awful half-inning for Rich Hill. No W for the kid tonight.

  30. Old and Blue says:

    August 1st, 2007 at 8:01 pm

Gary Mathews just called out Murton, too, saying he watches the ball too much and he needs to swing at the close ones. I assume he means especially late in the count.

Clock ticking on Matt, although he did drive one in.

Its amazing what a poor job Hendry continues to do in taking this team to the next level.

Watching DeRosa batting cleanup and trying to protect Derrick Lee is laughable, and its no DeRosa’s fault, he’s paid like a #6 hitter and produces like a #6 hitter.

Passing on bringing in Kenny Lofton to play CF and leadoff with a .300+ BA and .375 OBP when the price was a class A catcher will never make sense to me.

It would have allowed us to move Soriano to the #5 spot (#4 tonight) and actually given us some protection in the lineup.

As it is, Henry was probably too busy following scounting reports on Kerry Woods’ recent outings to be bothered to do something like improve the team.

  34. dave says:

Double by the Big Red Machine! I like this kid. I do. Cedeno to drive him in for the winner would be too perfect.

  38. Rich C&T says:

    August 1st, 2007 at 9:36 pm

Wow. We load the bases and blow it, then they load the bases and blow it.

And Brian, in all fairness, DeRosa isn’t our #4 hitter. He is tonight, but that’s not Hendry’s fault or DeRosa’s job on a normal night.

It would have allowed us to move Soriano to the #5 spot (#4 tonight) and actually given us some protection in the lineup.

The only thing that’s keeping Soriano from batting 4th or 5th is Lou and Soriano himself. Soriano wants to hit 1st, Lou tried putting him 5th and he didn’t produce so he stopped the experiment.

Having Lofton around wouldn’t change that, at all.

  49. dave says:

    August 1st, 2007 at 9:52 pm

he didn’t produce so he stopped the experiment.

    In 8 or 9 at-bats. You can’t learn much from 8 or 9 at-bats.

Ironically, he got moved back the leadoff spot and was 0 for 5 that day.

  52. josh b says:

    August 1st, 2007 at 9:57 pm

i don’t think 14 lob is bad actually. I’ve been looking at that particular number a lot. the problem with that number is that it counts every man left on base period. Its quite common for the winning team of a game to have quite a few men left on base.

For instance, say you have a 3 run inning. and you leave the bases loaded. thats 3 LOB. but you scored 3. Its not the best of stats.

Another example, Atlanta won 12-3 tonight. They did that while leaving 21 on base.

Take that number with a grain of salt.

The fact that the cubs are getting on base as much to LOB is a testament to winning even though they aren’t hitting home runs.

  53. Bleeding Blue says:

    August 1st, 2007 at 9:58 pm

No you can’t learn a ton from that few of ABs, but its was enough for Lou to stop trying it.

And regardless, I’m not even saying that the experiment should have been stopped, just pointing out the fact that it was stopped.

If Lofton had been aquired, Soriano would still be hitting leadoff. and tonight DeRosa would still have hit 4th.

  54. dave says:

    August 1st, 2007 at 9:58 pm

Ha… who would have thought. Jock and Soriano were they only two starters to not strike out.

    And GO MURTON!!!

Besides Murton being Man of the Match, Scott Erye pitched really well.

It’s a joke that Lou called out Murton. Let him play, shit-for-brains and he’ll hit. I’ve got 2000 AB’s of evidence to support this, and you’ve got Cliff ‘I hurt myself yawning in the morning’ Floyd.

  64. Andy says:

*Passing on bringing in Kenny Lofton to play CF and leadoff with a .300+ BA and .375 OBP when the price was a class A catcher will never make sense to me.*

Kenny Lofton should be getting paid by Penthouse, because he sure gives a lot of [admittedly delusional] people a fuckin’ hard-on.

*It would have allowed us to move Soriano to the #5 spot (#4 tonight) and actually given us some protection in the lineup.*

Soriano doesn’t want to hit fifth. And he doesn’t want to play CF–therefore, he doesn’t do either.

  67. Rob G. says:

    August 1st, 2007 at 10:55 pm

most box scores have a TEAM LOB, probably a more accurate stat fwiw.

  68. Rishi says:

    August 1st, 2007 at 10:56 pm

“Lineup protection” might be the most overhyped, meaningless concept in baseball. It matters so very little. Good hitters will hit regardless of who is behind them.

Pitchers don’t want to walk hitters. Period. You think Derrek saw worse pitches becasue DeRo was behind him instead of Aramis? Common sense (and maybe his two doubles) say otherwise.

Or take the extreme case: Barry Bonds will not see pitches no matter who hits behind him. He is unprotectable. Yes, you want to bunch your good hitters in the lineup, but not for protection.

  69. Mister Whipple says:

    August 1st, 2007 at 11:07 pm

Cubs are 25 of their last 35. That’s .714 ball for almost 6 weeks.

We’re tied for first in the Central and the WC. Two more games and we’re 2/3 of the way done with the season. This team could very well win over 90 games.

I can barely contain my glee.

    Ha ha. I said glee.

  70. chifan3887 says:

    August 1st, 2007 at 11:08 pm

I wonder if the they have a stat for % of runners scored as that would really tell you how the offense is doing driving guys in. Take the Braves tonight for example scored 12/33 base runners or a little over 30 percent meaning they hit .300 with guys on. So I guess the stat I am looking for is team BA with runner’s on.
