Diamondbacks trade for Jon Rauch

Some good news that should make us a bit calmer next time we go to the bullpen: the Diamondbacks traded for Nationals reliever Jon Rauch today.

Rauch has put up some good numbers this season: 48 appearances this season for a total of 48.1 innings, 2.98 ERA, 4-2 record, a 1.01 WHIP, and 17 saves. He’s okay with plenty of pitching, it seems- he led the league in appearances last season. He’s also set up for a while- he’s signed through the end of next season, with a club option for the 2010 season. It’ll be nice to have another arm out there that we can rely on- until, of course, he blows a game, and we start to get that same nervous feeling all of our relievers inspire.

In exchange, we sent Emilio Bonifacio to the Nationals. They were drawn in by his speed and numbers at the plate. Personally, I’m okay with letting him go. Speed is nice, but I’m not convinced he would have hit a lot at the Major League level- the PCA is notorious for being a hitter’s haven all around. Meanwhile, our offense has shown signs of waking up, and I think that solidifying the bullpen is a great move.

What’s your thoughts on the trade?

Excellent. Josh Byrnes, you are forgiven (almost) for the Tony Clark trade. This is a move I can get behind.
