2008 MLB Draft Rumor Mill
Here are some rumors as the draft steadily approaches: some come from very credible sources who talk to scouts and scouting directors daily, while others are just opinions so feel free to take these with a grain of salt. Still fun to talk about.
1) The Rays have narrowed it to Tim Beckham and Buster Posey, with Posey looking like the guy for them.
This pick would make sense to me in that they are depending on their pitching to transform that franchise, best thing to do in order to help the pitching is add a potential all- star catcher.
2) Aaron Crow and Pedro Alvarez are looking for $7 million+. Numbers are just numbers at this point and both are advised by Boras..so who knows. But, we could see as many as 4 or 5 major league deals in this draft ( two main things that go along with a ML deal are automatically going on the 40 man roster, and must be invited to spring training).
3) High school pitchers are dropping. There was not a great crop to begin with this year (boo hoo after being blessed with Kershaw, Parker, and Porcello the last few years). Tim Melville and Gerit Cole are falling some, although they still expect to go in the first round.
4) Kyle Skipworth’s ability to stay at catcher is in doubt. Prospect profile coming soon. This is nothing new, but teams thought he would be able to hit enough for 1B or the OF, and some are not so sure anymore. The Marlins and Nationals have had numerous brass at his games recently.
5) This is not a rumor - but Tanner Scheppers, RHP from Fresno State, previously a definite top 10 pick has a stress fracture in his shoulder. I still do not think he drops out of the top 15 since it is not a ligament or rotator cuff issue. Also, guys arent going to sign unti August 15th anyway, which is 12 weeks away. This is a 6 week injury so its not like he will miss development time.
6) The Mets may not go much over slot like it was assumed they would. Jim Callis said in a chat that their draft is going to be business as usual for them (not a direct quote). It was assumed that since they have the money, and have an awful system, they would spend the $ to replenish it.
