New Proof?

Will Carroll just came out with a very interesting article on Baseball Prospectus (subscribers only), referencing the arm-guard Barry Bonds wears, but in a much different context than the last article I’ve linked you too. If you’re not a subscriber, the general gist of the article is Carroll contacting the man who’s manufactured Bonds’ elbow guard since he first started wearing it in the early 90’s, Mark Silva.

Silva custom makes arm guards for players based on a plaster mold he makes on a yearly basis. Since he first started making Barry’s brace, which was designed after he was recovering from arm surgery in ‘92, Silva claims that the plaster mold he makes of Bonds’ arm hasn’t changed in size at all through his career. Carroll correctly notes how this ground-breaking a revelation that really is. Even with all the allegations of steroids, and the evident increase in hat size, one would assume that someone taking performance enhancing drugs would have a larger arm based on the muscle gain given by taking such supplements.

If you want to read the rest, I encourage you to get a subscription to Baseball Prospectus. My thanks go out to Will Carroll for giving me the heads-up on the article.

[…] Interesting note on the Bonds controversy: apparently the man who has manufactured Bonds’ elbow guard (a source of its own controversy) since he started wearing it in the early 90s says its size hasn’t changed. Does this mean he hasn’t used steroids? Probably not, though if the guy had said otherwise it would certainly be used as proof of steroid use. […]

I’ll answer that question. New Proof? No. Interesting? Yes.

All it takes is a glance at his before and after photos to know that something “big” happened and no armguard maker can proove otherwise.
