Giants claim Castillo
As per mlb.com, the Giants have claimed Jose Castillo off of waivers from the Florida Marlins. Showing the unabashed complete and utter fear of the unknown which has typified the post-2000 Sabean regime, the Giants have elected to go with a fatally-flawed-yet-experienced player over an inhouse option such as Justin Leone who may or may not be able to hit ML pitching (I personally believe big league pitchers would expose him). It rarely bodes well for a team when the fear of uncertainty trumps the fear of losing.
Upside:
1. This acquisition cost us absolutely nothing in the way of talent. Come to think of it, I applaud Sabes for finding an alternative to capitulation to the outlandish demands of Kenny Williams for Joe “even my mom doesn’t think I’m very good” Crede.
2. Sources within the Giants organization confirm that Castillo has a pulse. The fact that he is technically alive bodes well for his ability to man the hot corners as experiments with corpse 3rd basemen ended in embarrassing failure. Although a zombie 3rd baseman would be totally awesome.
3. At 27, Castillo is coming into his prime as <cough> <cough> a hitter.
4. Castillo improves our chances of acquiring the number 1 pick in 2009.
Downside:
1. Castillo has proven beyond the shadow of a doubt that he cannot hit a little white ball at the ML level. He has posted OPS’s below 700 (!) in 3 of the past 4 seasons. That’s not so good.
2. Castillo makes up for his offensive inadequacies by playing cover-your-eyes awful defense. Imagine the offensive prowess of Pedro Feliz without the defensive wizadry.
3. The Castillo acquisition probably takes AB’s away from young players who actually have a chance of not totally sucking.
4. Castillo brings the Giants one step closer to the 1962 mets.
